The DSM is essentially based on a paradigm of human nature posited by Kraeplin two centuries ago. Until relevantly recently it included homosexuality as a mental illness; on the other hand, the number of 'illnesses' and subsections of them continue to grow with each revised edition. Even though it looks 'scientific' much research shows that not only do experienced psychiatrists often differ greatly in their 'diagnosis; of an individual, what counts as 'schizophrenic'. for example varies across cultures. The DSM attempts to fit distressed human beings into conveniently simple boxes which purport to be objective and scientifically grounded. It is the antithesis to human-centred approaches to caring for emotionally overwhelmed individuals.
