wildcat says: On the company's anniversary, a future of sensors, robots and new thinking Given the current state of software development and reliability... I sure hope not. As always, very interesting stuff. With a lot of articles on mind and intelligence and AI etc. it should be realised, however, that such concepts as 'mind', 'consciousness', 'intelligence' and especially 'body' are extremely complex ideas (though they are words we all use happily without much thought day to day). I tend to think of such words as layer upin layer of conceptual palimpsests, so while it is quite appropriate to make connections between artificial and 'natural' (itself a minefield concept) thinking at appropriate and defined levels, it is far from legitimate to simply a neat congruence of neat, monolithic entities. Much of the more exciting develops are best seen, in my view any ... ab, I could not have agreed more, see " the extended mind" , having said that, to my eyes the subject of 'natural' vs 'artificial' is an anachronism.. Yes, I agree it's an anachronism. But so are the usual usages of single terms such as body, mind, emotion etc. I mean, hypostatisation, reification, metonymic cognition etc are all achronisms. Or, more positively, as I think you know, there is an identifiable shift in cognition. Could even look to a postmental future! there is an identifiable shift in cognitionthat is possibly the most interesting phenomenon of our times, and yes, you said it:" a post mental future", well worded. @abailart, without derogating the meaty parts of your comments (and you always seem able to pin down some of the key issues), also electricity, computing (mechanical and otherwise) and love are terms engulfing intricacies far richer than their wordy representation. and still we live with them all, each with her unique depth and breadth of comprehension. |
