AtlLiberal says: Sound familiar? I imagine Chaney would have fit right in. There truly is nothing new under the sun. How true. Good use of a Bible quote, BTW! :> Now you liberals are always accusing conservatives of being mean spirited. What in the world does Chaney have to do with "witch" torture? Good source of information also: Athesim.about.com You can always count on the truth there. Let's see. The latest from the non-mean-spirited conservatives is equating Sotomayor with the KKK and racism. And how about backing up your claim about the atheism site with examples? Go ahead. I'll wait. Does make you wonder about the twisted minds of people who condone torture. I sure wouldn't want to share my bed with someone who signed off on the practices condoned by Chaney and his ilk. I do wish those persecuted by the Catholic church weren't called "witches". Witches don't exist. Never have and never will. The word was invented as a way to terrorise the population into submission through extreme cruelty. I do wish those persecuted by the Catholic church weren't called "witches". Witches don't exist. Never have and never will.An interesting point. Of course, the popular conception of "witches" has been used by the church to demonize a whole host of people. Pagans, anti-social (read as non-church going), and people somehow different due to infirmity or personality. IOW, anyone they didn't like. You know, this is an interesting clip Alt; thanks. I think some of it became about taking other's property too. Atliberal, I said: "Athesim.about.com You can always count on the truth there." You said: "And how about backing up your claim about the atheism site with examples? Go ahead. I'll wait. " I have to admit you were right. I could not find any truth there. Oh, so you were not being sarcastic? You have read articles on that site? Then I totally misread your comment.. I suppose you're talking about "Biblical" truth? Is that correct? What articles do you find to be untruthful? And why? I do wish those persecuted by the Catholic church weren't called "witches". Witches don't exist. Never have and never will. The word was invented as a way to terrorise the population into submission through extreme cruelty.Of course they exist, and they always have. It was a legitimate and accepted thing, though until the church's action they were pretty much left alone. But the folks who were persecuted by the church were Christians who were named as heretics, and "witch" was the easiest term to use IMHO. IMO, the term witch was used not so much as a descriptive term but more as a pejorative to express a negative attitude towards a whole class of people including but not exclusive to people that didn't hold the religious, social, or cultural values of the majority. Aiming for more specificity, my guess is that most people today when they hear the term conjure (pun intended) up the image of Wiccans, which obviously is WT's take on this. AltLiberal, you are correct. And yes, many folks do think of Wiccans when they hear "witch" today. But I'm still of the opinion that the term's history be accurate, which means the Wiccans don't own it (despite the "reclaim the word" movement). Wicca is only around 80 years old; the word "witch," in all its negative glory, has been around LONG before that. |
