Reagan health programme would have appalled most Americans, had he explained it as carefully as Carter had done, but he had found a formula for avoiding tough political issues and making his opponents look like wonks.

It wasn't always like this. The founding fathers of the republic - Benjamin Franklin, Thomas Jefferson, James Madison, John Adams, Alexander Hamilton and others - were among the greatest thinkers of their age. They felt no need to make a secret of it.

How did the project they launched degenerate into George W Bush and Sarah Palin?

On one level, this is easy to answer. Ignorant politicians are elected by ignorant people. US education, like the US health system, is notorious for its failures. In the most powerful nation on earth,
§ 20% of adults believes the sun revolves round the earth;
§ 26% accept that evolution takes place by means of natural selection;
§ 66% of young adults are unable to find Iraq on a map;
§ 66% of US voters cannot name the three branches of government;
§ the maths skills of 15-year-olds in the US are ranked 24th out of the 29 countries of the OECD.

But this merely extends the mystery: how did so many US citizens become so stupid, and so suspicious of intelligence?[/b[b]...

Let's not forget to factor in the dumbing down of everyone as a result of endless hours in front of the "boob tube".

Democracy is about representation. One aspect of representation is being 'typical of', or 'representative of' the people who voted. The voters want to see the image of themselves in their representatives, their core values, their beliefs, their attitudes. In this sense, it can hardly be denied that American democracy is truly representative of many voters. Of course, this is only one aspect of representation.

"I want a President who's better than me. I want a President who's smarter than me. I want a President who's better at judging people and motivations than me. I want a President who's sharp, and smart, and experienced. This is the President we're talking about, not "who should be the captain of the after-work softball team".

I recall a quote from Oliver Stone's movie 'Nixon' :

Nixon shuffles back alone, coming to a stop in front of a larger-than-life, full-length oil portrait of JOHN F. KENNEDY. Nixon studies the portrait, pads closer. Looks up.

Most of reading this article - non bushel supporters as advised - have known the truth of this for a long time. To see it articulated so well is an endorsement of our attempts to use reason and intellect against blind faith in one man who displayed the very worst of human abilities.

There was a time when attacking Bush&Co was akin to blasphemy. God on earth could do no wrong. The best of America's young men died and were mangled in mind and body to prove they were serving a false god. Now you cannot get an answer as to when his devotees ceased being Bush cult followers. They could so easily replace the AWOL master with a fraud pseudo-hero.

While they are unable to have real meaning separat...
