I wonder what the evolutionary benefit of glowing in the dark has for a mushroom?

Oortchoud - Great question! I would love to find that out myself. Does anyone know?

"Many mushrooms require light for proper development"

Maybe the glowing helps the develop? Thats all I could find really...maybe its what they digest and it causes that? Good question!! I'm really curious now!

I too did a cursory search of the web on it, but didn't find anything right off. The glowing effect is the same as that found in lightning bugs. The bugs do it for mate attraction (as far as I understand) however I don't see how this would be effective for mushrooms.

Since the mushrooms have such a short period I wonder if its not to get attention? Flowers use color to attract insects to pollinate them - I wonder if the bioluminance is to attract animals so that they help spread their spores? I dunno. Still pretty interesting.
