thisnamecantbetaken says: If plants do have some sort of "feelings", what are all the vegans and vegetarians going to do? After all, you can't live on love alone... YES! I definitely think it all comes down to how you define feelings, but from my understanding of it they certainly do react in similar ways as humans, we just can't perceive it. I posted about this a couple of days earlier. Plants and other organisms actually do feel pain, they just cannot express it vocally. For vegans to state that eating plants is less cruel, I guess it's really a matter of opinion, like everything else. If anything, they are just reaching lower on the food chain, and killing something that cannot be heard. Strange as this phenomena may seem, I totally agree with both of you. I have tons of houseplants and if one of them seems to be not doing well, I move it enough so it can "touch" another plant and often in remarkably short time, the plant seems to recover and thrive. This may just be co-incidental, but who cares? As long as it seems to work. Some people will even swear to, that talking or singing while gardening is good for the plants too. Which reminds me, [clipper]clipette[/url] and i could definitely show our houseplants more love -- if there was ever something to inspire us to be better plant parents, this is it I think you guys are giving plants too much credit. No central nervous system means no brain, no nerve endings. No nerve endings means no pain. Plants do not actually have to 'think' to release chemicals. It's embedded into their DNA. "If plants do have some sort of "feelings", what are all the vegans and vegetarians going to do? After all, you can't live on love alone." I'm reminded of the quote. "I'm not a vegetarian because I love animals. I'm a vegetarian because I hate plants." On the same basis, it can be argued that plants also feel pain. They, too, recoil from detrimental sensations. Research by Alan Bown of Brock University in Canada showed that, ten seconds after an insect crawls on to a leaf, the plant secretes a paralysing agent (called gamma aminobutyric acid) that attacks the intruder's nervous system. Bown explained that plants distinguish between harmless contact from raindrops and the action of caterpillar feet. Not only that, but having been attacked by insects, plants repair their wounds by releasing the chemical superoxide, which helps to prevent infection. I believe that every living thing on the planet has "feelings" in the essence that we are all connected. We have a symbiotic relationship with plants. (the exchange of oxygen and carbon dioxide) While their "consciousness" may be alien to us, who's to say we are just as alien to them. As far as the vegan issue: fruits & vegetables can either fall from the plant or tree and rot, or become part of the vegan's food chain. I know it is not this simplistic, but time & space constraints limit responses. fruits & vegetables can either fall from the plant or tree and rot, or become part of the vegan's food chain. With all due respect to vegans etc, the same could in theory be said, that instead of just dying and rotting, animals just become part of the carnivour's food chain. If a plant truly does feel pain, then ripping a screaming carrot up by hair and removing is skin and then boiling it (ha ha, sounds funny) is no more barbaric than slaughtering an animal for sustenance. I believe that either God or evolution or whatever one may believe in, gave carnivours canine teeth for a reason. To eat meat. (Including humans) Their physiology has evolved/been created to do j... I've been having a torrid love affair with an African Violet for several years! I'd tell my wife but she isn't in to 'three ways'! My tomatoes and pepper plants are rockin already. Can't wait. ; ) I believe that plant life has a consciousness that "feels" trauma. Obviously not the same way as we do, without a nervous system to generate pain and a sentient consciousness to register it. But I have used the idea to counterpoint the vegans who rag on me for my carnivorous nature. That's crazy! I always thought this was just a joke to tease vegans This clip was on today's clipiversity. Thanks for the great clip! To answer the original question: if plants have feelings, consistent vegetarians would have to start eating meat or starve to death. Inconsistent ones may continue to slaughter innocent heads of lettuce and commit all sorts of vegetable infanticide. Seriously, why would we assume plants can't have properties beyond what we already knew of them? Science should be the open-minded pursuit of knowledge about the world/universe, but in the eyes of the masses it claims an ultimacy that makes science just a series of mental blocks to be overcome only if someone can/does find empirical data. Don't forget, earth was once flat and Pluto was a planet. Great clip adamc. I'm still in the process of reading the book "The Secret Life of Plants" which some of the info you clipped came from. One of the thoughts to be gleaned from from a examination of this subject is that we are all more connected at a deeper level than once thought. Consciousness brings with it responsibility. How do we use what we become aware of. If we realize what we are doing causes the opposite of what we intended certainly we need to consider some alternative action if we are to continue in a harmonious relationship. I believe experiments regarding plants having feelings are ways for us to gain insight into universal consciousness that the way we think affects everyt... ROFL LOL LOL LOL LMAO.......... This is the funniest post ever. HAhahahahahahahaha. Sorry, I just think debating over the "feelings" of my plant is too funny! Let's just say plants did have "feelings"...Vegans would starve to death, there would be such thing as plant cruelty like animal cruelty(there would be plant cruelty officers reporting on plant abuse(animalprecinct & plantprecinct)), you could tell if your plant is happy, sad, confused, gloomy, depressed or just not having a good day, plants could take prescription drugs like anti-depressants if your plant is depressed(but when your not looking the plant might attempt suicide with a knife), if your plant has ADHD you can give it Ritalin, and if your plant has to have surgery done it will be injected with morphine. "'A plant sits and rots, but I don't know if a animal sits and rots'...maybe.... how are you going to say that through over 4 billion years of evolution plants still cant feel anything. are u serious? Michigan state university has done studies showing that plants have a rudimentary nervous system (basic nervous system). And how many cows did it take to make a hamburger and then think how many plants it took to make your salad. You cant say that one life is worth more than another because the value of life cant be compared its the same. So i think that its worth killing 1 cow to feed lets say 30 people than to kill 100 plants to feed 5 people |
