It is hard to understand why "working class" people vote for parties with these policies.
It is a real contradiction. The Labour Party, in Australia, traditionally supports the working class. But the working class has voted them out on the wrong issues at times.
Most families can tell of members who were saved by the unemployment benefits or free medical or Invalid Pension etc - all placed there by the working class who were able to tell the Party what they wanted. These benefits are law.

It seems almost everybody hates welfare until they need it. Used the way it was intended has definite benefits. Unfortunately all it takes is just a few to ruin it for those who truly need it.

I agree, used the way it is intended it is a useful program. The only problem is that it is so often abused it makes you not want your money wasted. I can't count the number of times I've witnessed the same kind of scenario Reagan described back in '76. Also, somehow I still see people trying to buy their damn cigarettes with food stamps. And I don't shop at the low end places in the ghetto, I'm sure it is 10X worse there.

I took them shopping to spend the last of their food stamps which they used to buy a really lush dinner. Some customers in the store started with dirty looks and went on to nasty comments. One of the girls jumped up on the checkout counter and said, "adies & gentlemen, after two and a half months on food stamps and unemployment, WE HAVE JOBS! With the last of our food stamps, we are buying a dinner to celebrate the event. We hope that others ...

People who observed our family may have made judgmental assumptions. We use to get in line, my siblings and myseld to each individually buy a food product that was just over the dollar. So, for example, I would get a can of tuna for $2.01 and then get 99 cents change. After each of the three oldest children had done this, my mom would have enough coins to buy laundry detergent or toilet paper or whatever basic necessities were needed. Of course, we used the county food bank, school lunches, and church suppers to keep having food when the Food Stamps were out.

The resentment toward people who may game the system for cigarettes is so disproportionate. We have corporate welfare that benef...
