invictus says:
"These are the days that try men's souls..."

I wish a happy 4th of July to our friends from the USA... And I salute the leaders of the American Revolution on this 231st anniversary, once again. Keep up the spirit of the Founders.

Thank you, Invictus. It's a very special day for Americans, wherever we are. Living in Canada now, I miss the 4th of July barbecues and fireworks I've been used to until the last two years. Here it may just be another day, but in my heart I am celebrating my heritage!

Happy 4th to everyone south of the border...uh, can I stereotype and say, "Bring on the barbeque" or something food & grill-related

Thanks...happy 4th to you guys, too. I'm from Texas where all are BBQ pits are submerged in water and we're practically breathing with the aid of reeds. Obviously, no 4th celebrations for us.

I'm sorry. It would feel callow to celebrate today. The America I would celebrate is only a memory at this moment. We have lost our liberties through indifference, inaction, and suffrage to greed held by the powerful.

To me, to keep the spirit of the founders, as has been properly cited here as a noble thing, we must do far more than simply cook-out and watch the pretty colors rain down. We must redouble our resolve to maintain the REAL American promise of liberty from tyranny. We must act to bring back the notions of integrity in action by our trusted leaders; of tolerance of those who are different than we; of understanding the importance of investment not in quarterly profits but rather ...

BartendingBear, this is exactly why Americans have to embrace the spirit and the ideals of the late 18th century. And this is exactly why I began my remarks with that specific quote from Thomas Paine.

I believe, many fellow clippers already know what I think and how I feel about this subject so I won't say more here. But I must add, I strongly agree with every sentence of your comment.

I really liked the two quotes, Thomas Paine and John Adams. I had a working 4th in a boat repair shop at Lake Wappapello--no rest/celebration in tourist/resort areas. Its another work day. Will shoot off a few fireworks when it gets darker--its just now 8:34 p.m. CDT.
