*** Junior MI5 agents risked careers by speaking to a newspaper when they discovered that members of an al-Qaeda cell they were trying to trace turned out to be working for the Metropolitan Police. The officers, who were identified as contacts for al-Qaeda, are believed to be involved with the highly secretive and mysterious "Special Branch" which has special powers, is not subject to public scrutiny, and has links to senior officials within the security services including MI5.
