delete101 says: I believe sleep deprivation is torture, although many believe otherwise. Torture shouldn't be condoned, regardless of it's form, no matter what's at stake. Unfortunately, we live in a cruel, imperfect world in which war will always be present and torture is almost always involved with war. This is a reality that must be accepted. Any use of torture is immoral. PERIOD. As painful as it is, I see little room for idealism in the cold hard light of reality in this instance. Imagine that one of the 9/11 hijackers had been apprehended in advance, and with a little 'persuasion' parted with the details of that plot! This is where idealism runs full-tilt into reality. These are the moral ambiguities of our age and there are no easy answers. I however strongly oppose detaining someone without, at the very least, recourse to legal representation. I have little faith in such polls -- whether they indicate pro- or anti- torture tendencies -- for the very reason the last clipped line emphasizes. The definition of "torture" is so muddied these days as to make such polls meaningless. What is torture -- sleep deprivation, solitary confinement, a blue copy of the Koran when the prisoner prefers red, electrodes to the testicles, bamboo beneath the fingernails? I strongly believe torture is unacceptable regardless of the reason, but I would also write off as inane much of what is proposed to be "torture" today. Reality is very harsh, and allot of the bad guys are just that. Bad people that no one really wants to deal with and it takes a certain amount of information gathering to get certain details of enemy combatants. Its unfortunate (torture) but we (American Government) have the most humane ways of information extraction. What certain troops allowed themselves to do (Abu Grab) wasn't always what was ordered. Also "torture" is just a key word used by much of the press to put a certain spin or attention grabbing headliner. If you want to point fingers, slam someone, or bring this isuse up, call the press and tell them to air all the real torture that is used in other countries (Africa and surrounding areas being one of the worst). Apart from the massive dilemma of torturing people, it often just doesn't work. People assent to anything and will even make stuff up if they think it will get them out of a tight spot. And the truly trained are prepared to make whatever sacrifice for their cause. If one of the 9/11 hijackers had been tortured beforehand, he would have taken it in stride knowing in his heart that he was going to die an honorable death, that his cause would go through no matter what. Finally, a smart organization won't allow anyone to know any more of the picture than they need to. Assuming the person only spits out one factoid that turns out to be true, maybe it's just an address. But what about the ad... A yes the ticking bomb scenario, a total crock if you ask me, to many things have to work just right. Torture is wrong and there is nothing "humane" about it. Period. |
