Iraq. nor punished those who waged this warThey will surely punish you Bin Laden, you don't know Americans. Also, don't forget, the wrath of Allah, it is coming soon. Sorry, I'm just not in a mood for this B grade movie which plays every freaking year during this month. And will media anywhere start the process of rendering him insignificant? Stop promoting his ass.THROW IT IN THE TRASH. Wait...the engineer of one of the most atrocious attacks on American soil should be rendered "insignificant". I thought that was the problem that we didn't see the real enemy..oh wait we didn't see the enemy you want us to see....gotcha! Mind you, doing this mass murdered job for him is not my idea of fighting terrorism. But there was a time when murders where pursued put on trial and made to pay the consequences of their crimes. I guess when your fighting the wrong war, in the wrong place at the wrong time, well bearded men in caves plotting the deaths of millions are "insignificant". What people don't understand (if they only get their news from the American media) is that in Arabic, Bin Laden comes across as impassioned but very very logical and even poetic. Although we dismiss his sound bites as lunacy, we overlook the important underlying fact that these speeches are enormously influential, and even compelling. We should really try to understand why if we are going to make in progress. I suggest anyone read "Messages to the World." It's the only book in English to contain the complete texts of his statements. (through 2004) After all, you should ask yourself: have I really ever heard or read a complete Bin Laden statement? If you haven't, then you are probably jumpin... Ok TRN we covered this ground. But who is the President now? Who promised to bring him dead or alive? Yeah I know I should inject more facts, and my previous statement on your clip stands. But for the here and now, the weight falls on Bush and his "administration". So I guess debbyski question stands, why is this guy still yapping his mouth? ouyangwulong, you probably right, but the underlying message is still murderous. If anything, people like Bin Laden are not wild eye lunatics that go off like firecrackers, they are cold, calculating persons, and that makes the all the more dangerous. At Ratilfar: That's the interesting thing about media distortion, and the rewarding thing about research. Although Bin Laden certainly has made plenty of murderous speeches, this isn't one of them. In fact, there are no calls for attacks or threats made in this video. (This is a startling shift in rhetoric suggesting greater confidence and security, if you ask me.) It is interesting to compare this ABC report with the more level-headed BBC take on the tape, which is clipped here. On the whole, this speech is a condemnation of American policy, and a criticism of the faults he sees in the American political system, as well as our na... May I interrupt this sound byte moment to bring you an important message: The media keeps fanning this guy to incite the flames of islamic hatred. Everytime everybody shows a clip or makes a fuss over another of these cleverly timed tapes, we CONTRIBUTE to his marketing of his message. It just makes him more important. Stop picking the scab! There are more important messages in the heart of all these troubled countries that are being overlooked everytime we spend time on him and stupid shrub. I take the contrary view to NonStatQuo (not to imply that I am the status quo, though)... I think that Bin Laden's message, like Bush's, is fundamentally flawed, and that if presented in the marketplace of ideas for full intellectual scrutiny, it would not hold up. However, he should be refuted on the basis of why he is wrong, not on the basis of why we are right, or the way we want to demonize him. Currently the American response to Bin Laden, and many of the discontents of the Arab world, not to mention around the world, is a straw man. We have altered or distorted their arguments to make them appear totally absurd, rather than refuting their substance. Thus, I believe that the more w... |
