They even killed female goats because their private parts were not covered and their tails were pointed upward, which they said was haram.

That's just an excuse to exterminate what is female. I wonder how much they'll miss goat meat after the last male has been eaten. And where will they get milk for cheese or for their children to drink? Cows are expensive to raise in the desert.

I see your point, arifsali. I agree that ignorance (and a fair amount of patriarchy) is to blame. Indeed, I have often scolded some who would blame honor killings on Islam that much older traditions are at play. Thank you for calling me out.

But seriously, it's exactly these kind of nutcases that tarnish the beautiful religion of Islam... Yes, the more enlightened among us know damn well that there are a lot of other things at play here (like ignorance, tribal customs, and more ignorance on top of that). What's sad is that these ridiculous things are done in the name of religion, and that's what sticks in the minds of those who don't know better.
