Profit is the bottom line for every corporation. Damage to the enviroment and humans are secondary.

If companys would just pay to fix the areas of violation, I think it would equal the amount they rack up in fines yearly. But hey, they are not paying the fines or they renegotiate for a lower penalty, so know I know why they don't fix the areas that aren't up to stadards.
