ratilfar says: I think I clipped this before, but considering the current discussions about Obama and race, I thought it was time to bring it back. Excellent commentary. I agree that if someone claims to be "colorblind" what they are actually blind to are the issues surrounding race. Thanks. Well the point is obviously lost on you. But I will try. I argue that one can not ignore color, it is part of the equation. However, color is but one aspect of someone existence, integral, yes, but not all defining. Like religion and ethnicity, one can not ignore these things. The question, as I say time and time again is: Do you see only color, or do you see color AND something more? When crossing the color line one must do so with eyes wide open, less one is liable to smack one forehead on something. He argues for both at the same time! He demands that you see color and that you also put on preconceived bias glasses that says all Blacks are carbon copies of each other and oppress... Now how can one do better than say that they will try to treat others fairly no matter what their color or race is?By acting in such way that tries to understand all factors, including race. In an ideal world it would not really matter, but reality is not the same way. How can the anyone imagine that people of any race are too stupid toYou would be surprised. Many people act and speak as it this was irrelevant, presuposing that their experiences are either superior to or trump those of others. Problem is that these attitudes are so ingrained, that the speaker... They aren't and I don't mean to insult the speaker on the podcast, but I have a hard time understanding how it would take them several years to get the fact that groups, races, ethnicities commonly have difficulties if not outright wars with each other? It took me severa years because 1) I come from the idea that their might be racial divisions or racism for that matter is suppresed, 2) because I believed that I was not tainted by these attitudes I could understand the impact of my words and attitudes on others. I assume that I was right, and besides, I didn't mean to insult or denigrate anyone, right? Not excuse for my ignorance, or the ignorance of others. |
