Socratoad says: The images are startling. A young prostitute talks to camera and explains that she is going back to work the streets of a city where, a few days before, two women like her have been murdered. She does it, she says, because she needs the money. A few days later she too is killed. I know it's easy to pass judgment of addicts, and indeed they cause immeasurable pain to their families, but understanding that it's simply not a matter of them saying "no", and then providing them medical and psychological resources is a good first step towards helping them. People need to insist that governments make it a top priority to provide funding for research and the treatment of addicts rather than bombing civilian populations and giving tax breaks to corporations that manufacture weapons of mass destruction. |
