Robert Silverberg wrote a novel set in a future society in which many recreational drugs were legal (it was not the focus of the book, just a side detail). The protagonist mentioned that his favorite was one which induce synesthesia, a state in which the sensed become scrambled - sounds are perceived as tastes or smells, touch takes on a visual aspect, and so on. This seems like a similar effect, albeit restricted to the sense of taste.
