Article about how Blizzard's CEO has finally made it clear-ish where they stand on sexuality in World of Warcraft.

This is revolving around the stories in the past couple of months about a GLBTer being told she could not advertise a GLBT guild in game.

This is an issue that really bothered me, I think that I you can have Christian groups, Republican groups, etc, you should be able to have a GLBT group. The whole idea of guilds in online games is to play with people you get along with.

The remarks some people make of how sexuality has no place in games are in my opinion, ignorant, as sexuality (sexual orientation in this case) play a major role in our daily lives, online and off. It defines how we talk and relate to one another.

Besides, I can completely agree with the reasoning for GLBT guild.. i can't even begin to count how many time I've heard "He's a fag" or "that's soo gay".

Granted, "That's so gay" is rarely meant in a negative way (really..), but "Fag" is us

It's great to hear this come from Blizzard...

mentioning or discussing sexual orientation or gender identity in a non-insulting fashion is not a violation of the anti-harassment policy and does not constitute grounds for a warning or any other disciplinary action
I'm totally fascinated by how the web is enabling the creation of an infinite number of communities which must be held together with structures that in some way mirror those in society.

Indeed,
it is just a shame it took so many weeks for this to come from the CEO, for
this finally to be cleared up. It shouldn't have taken lawyers &
media coverage. I understand that it very well may have been a training
issue, and a mistake on one individual's part, but the problem should have been
resolved within days.

MMORPGs
and other online communities are very much like mini-societies, they usually
have my sub groups and though because of the environment and setting, they
might have a much greater representation from one particular group, this does
not mean that that group should dominate the scene and control how people
interact (or not).

As
well, companies that run these ...
