It's a very good thing that they didn't get away with this. They should all fry. Agreed. though I think death is too good a punishment for them... this is grim, very very grim. I really don't know how and where they get such scum into the military, and one of them a Sgt. no less. One psychopath managing to creep by the recruiting officers , perhaps! But four of them in one unit??? Something is very badly wrong here. So much for the battle for hearts and minds. When I was in the military, quite some time ago, it was repeatedly drilled into our heads , long before we ever went to another country , that we were always to remember that we were ambassadors for our country. We need to change the laws that let these kinds of people avoid the death penalty. Just because he confesses - shouldn't mean that he won't be held accountable for his actions. well, though I agree, I also know that it might be harder to convict the other 3 without his testimony, now, no doubt he will still (hopefully) get consecutive life sentences... and with any luck somebody on the "inside" will do him in for raping & killing a teenager... (let alone killing a six year old girl.. and her family) Convicts, like most people tend to hate child molesters. This is disgusting. I hope to hell he drops the soap when he rots in prison. You have to wonder how many cases we never hear about. My impression is that this kind of thing can usually be covered up pretty effectively. I bet this happens every day all the time in every place where there are International Forces. We are not talking only about American soldiers we are talking about soldiers from lots of countries. The thing is: this situations can be serious problems so they are covered up. IT HAPPENS PEOPLE!! THIS WORLD IS NOT AS GOOD AS YOU THINK! Every war brings out the worst in us, I fear. It brings out the worst in SOME... it also brings out the best in many, likely more than not. There's no excuse for what this guy did, it's not the war that caused it. Perhaps many times this stems from sexual frustration, you must shower together (cannot masturbate) you live gender specific (all male or all female no integration). So many get frustrated and need to have a release especially when there is so much tension everyday. My idea is, when you join, all males and females must have an internal contraceptive device and on their off time they all can get "freaky" with one another with out fear of pregnancy. This will relieve a lot of stress and tension and create happy neurons (forgot the name of them) in their brains,(not to mention a possible increase in Recruitment) this may help stave off such horrible acts. Its just a thought. What do you think? Interesting idea... but the bottom line is - we're not animals. There are many things in this world that are uncomfortable to all the way to barely bearable, but that doesn't mean one should forgo self-control, ability to choose and exercise morality because of 'frustration'. If the guy is frustrated - on his leave time - go meet someone and perhaps even get lucky - that's fine... but you don't go to rape and kill someone... there's absolutely no justification in my mind for that kind of behavior. What I meant was if they had an "outlet" for themselves (our soldiers) they would "NOT" take it out on other people or in wrong directions. That is all. I do not mean, if a soldier is stressed that he/she can take it out on others or have the right to. In conclusion, I don't think our soldiers have an outlet that is equivalent to the stress they must endure. If they did (within the military bases) they wont be so stressed when outside. That is all. But you are right, the best relief is visiting home. I wrote my masters thesis on rape in war. Such behaviours are very difficult to explain but they don't generally have everything to do with one's criminality, prior to or during military service. The explanation is more around the effects that war and being in the military has on an individual. Of course, I'm not excusing such behaviour (just in case anyone reads this as that) - but I am interested in the theory behind it. Frappe, rape isn't a substitute for sex, but has more to do with demonstrating one's power, or the other's weakness, through violation. Debbyski, I think the argument might be not that rape is a behaviour that is latent within certain individuals (there but waiting to be brought out), but is created by the conditions. It's a minor point, but it's the difference between war being a reversion to some sort of natural behaviour, and war being the artificial creation of brutality. Anyway, point 1: Yes, rape as a 'tool' of war is a separate issue and happens for different reasons. For example, there was some evidence to suggest that the Serbs were using rape as a weapon against the Muslims in the struggles in the former Yugoslavia as part of their 'ethnic cleansing', and that this was policy from the top down. (A number of cases have recently been brought to the Hauge/ ICC on this.) I doubt that that such policies came into play in this case in this clip, but nonetheless, rape in war is normally a product of the war itself. It's not so muc... Point 2: Other explanations for this behaviour are that war brutalises an individual and the longer he (because those in war are normally male) stays in a war situation, the more brutal he will become during that time period. A further explanation is around the effects that men have on each other in war (and in peace). " Forgive me if i am wrong, but isn't the art and science of becoming a soldier is to become a highly skilled killer? Aren't you murdering people in the name of your country? Haven't you been trained in the art of warfare? This doesn't mean you are sent out into the battlefield with a basket full of posies and bubblegum to spread good cheer.
