Kore7 says:
Are you being tailed? How do you know what to look out for? Use this handy guide to see if they're really watching you or if it's all in your head.
If you want to identify a tail, look at their shoes: they are hard to change. Move frequently between crowded and empty places: this forces them to keep closing for fear of losing you, drawing back, then closing again. This makes them conspicuous. But don't jump on or off trains just before the doors close--that's for the movies; and anyway, a good surveillance team will already have someone on the train, as well as on the platform.

Just because you're paranoid, doesn't mean they're not after you ..

I was tailed once due to a lawsuit. He followed me all the way out to my second property at a dead end hollow. I put it in reverse and politely asked him what the hell he thought he was doing in my neck of the woods. He sped out of the hollow the fastest I've ever seen anyone. My lawyer gave me a copy of the report before we settled.

How creepy! When I think someone is following me, I drive past my house, to make sure. I might be paranoid.

They're on to your amateur tricks, mousie.

You are probably right. They are at my house stealing my stuff while I'm driving around trying to lose them.

No, seriously, things have been pretty hot over here in China. I live next to the Ethnic Minorities' University, full of Tibetan students. The whole neighborhood has been staked out.

My email and phone are all monitored, so I should probably watch what I say here for a while. In case the thought police are listening: I love the PRC, and Tibet is an inseparable part of it!

My favorite plain clothes police officer is the guy who has, for the last five days, stood at the same spot in front of a walled compound, pretending to take a leak in the bushes while he looks around.

It doesn't help that I have a "reactionary history," associations with "the Dalai Clique" and that I happen to be the only six-foot-tall white guy in 10 miles.

Ouyangwulong, thanks for checking in, and thanks for the update. I've noticed your absence, and wondered if you were okay over there in the hot seat.

Be careful.

It was pretty close there for a while, but the heat is off me for now, at least for a bit.

That is, until I go to Pakistan this May. It's too bad I can't clip life for y'all, but some day I will get around to updating my blog, then clip that.

yeah, still alive and kicking, but it took some baksheesh to get my internet back up and working.

And, of course, the best way to lose a tail is to do something incredibly boring, like Zen meditation. After an hour or two, no cop is paid enough money to watch you while you watch paint dry.

Good to hear you're still causing trouble over in the PRC, Austin. We were worried for you. Though with your skills, I'm sure you're losing more tails than a herd of salamanders!

Unfortunately, I have no such exciting excuses for my continued absence...

Thanks Debby, smooch back.

Don't worry Kore7. I'll let you in on another trade secret:

Wanna lose a tail pronto? Walk up to them and offer to buy them a beer. They will stammer and take off because they thought they were a super spy, but who were they kidding? They should know that no construction worker wears patten-leather shoes. (The shoes really are a give away, especially because most spooks are ex-military who polish their shoes obsessively.)

Yeah, it's a good plan, yanceducat, but then once you've done that, how do you use your metaphysical tail?

Mental constructions are much harder to shake than under-paid commies!

That's why paranoia is a lifestyle these days.

Once you let it in, you've pretty much gotta take the ball and run with it, because you'll never get it out.

Next step: stocking up on closed circuit TV cameras, barbed wire, canned food and shotgun shells. Buying army surplus fatigues, carrying big knives, and scaring the hell out of all my neighbors.

If this sounds like any of you, maybe we should form a support group. Of course, the support can take the form of a 12 step program (as in "love and support"), or just covering fire while I make a break for it. (As in "air support.")

I am a dude who has gone through the psychiatric system, and I have seen the same individual everywhere I went for a week. One time he was dressed like a crazy bum, but I noticed his exspensive leather brand new shoes. He even went as far as to lay on the ground like a vagrant. So I confronted him, and asked if he was affiliated with a particular mental health organization, that was employing him. He seemed super nervus, was sweating profusely, and stunk like B.O. His answere was yes, only he was on vacation. And he seemed very tight lipped when I tried to converse about the weather. I'm a diagnosed "parnoid schizopohrenic", and his holiday consisted of shadowing me. Once your in your in. I'...
