"The Throne of the Third Heaven of the Nations’ Millennium General Assembly" titles this collection of extraordinary pieces, cobbled together over 14 years by James Hampton. Hampton was an African-American janitor in Washington, DC.

A man of modest means, Hampton rented some storage space in an alley and created this work out of discarded bits of foil and plastic, junk furniture and second-hand items.

The work wasn't discovered until after his death in 1964, when the landlord of the storage space opened it up to clear it out. It now resides in the Smithsonian's folk art display.
