Dons Digital Dig says: Americans were once free and sovereign. Native Americans were once free and sovereign. The Lakota do what all should do, but they will not. God bless the Lakota, wish I was with them. Very interesting Do you mean by free and sovereign, A country of their own to govern themselves? where do you think it will go from here, what will be the results? This is a bogus story. Russel Means is nothing but an activist. He ran for president of the tribe but lost. This is about as valid as if Al Gore went out and signed Kyoto all by himself. Appreciate the insight, observation, you may be right yet still I wish it were true for the indigenous people as a whole, U.S. has not done right. I camped out a few days at the campsite of AIM when they made their first claim to retake the Black Hills; many years ago. Russel Means is a very impressive person. Later I stayed overnight at his house once. He -- and almost all the Lakota I've met, have more guts than most white people could ever imagine; and we also can't image the PERSPECTIVE they come from: This (the USA) was their land until the European immigrants came over and stole it from them. Their PERSPECTIVE is that this was done with lies and deceit and harsh violence. They don't buy it. They never accept the deal. It's their land and their culture and if we want to live side-by-side or work out something like that, ok, I ... I didn't call anyone a sell out. My beef here isn't with Means, but with the media. They reported this as is if it actually happened, but like I said, it is no more significant than if a private citizen of the US signed a treaty with another country. Without any authority it is meaningless. Yet they ran this as front page news without putting any research into it at all. And they have the nerve to criticize the accuracy of bloggers. It is not about Russell Means or the Media. It is about the idea of sovereignty. The indigenous people can access its reality, we have forgotten how. If they gain it, it opens it up for us more. I have friends in AIM, have spent time with them, sweat with them, attended their Sundance, have tried to be of service to them, and love many of their ways. I would love liberty for myself, my family and friends. Russell means takes a position and that I love. I appreciate your clarification n2sooners, but still disagree "it is no more significant than if a private citizen of the US signed a treaty with another country." Revolutions and the formations of new governments often start with the ideas and actions of a few: The American Revolution, the Israeli re-invasion of the Middle East, The South American revolutions against Spain, the French Revolution, The English Civil War, etc., etc., etc. Russell Means is NOT a single individual doing this and although it may be an almost instinctual, knee-jerk reaction to disparage the American Indian Movement, they have been around for decades, they have fought armed battles with US government agents, they... |
