i couldn't read on how they did that on the web site because of all the ??????? [question marks]
and its hard to say if they just speed it up really fast, or... computerize the whole thing.
but if anybody has got any idea's, let me know

Not exclusively a Japanese trick. Get a camera. Slow shutter speed + flash/pen light = light painting.
