AtlLiberal says:
Whoa. The implications from this will be enormous. If this project succeeds expect a concerted campaign of denial and attack from the religious conservatives.

That's what I was thinking. But perhaps we can give them the benefit of the doubt...? Maybe they'll embrace the onward march of knowledge from science.

Hmmm. What will the ability to manufacture DNA do to criminal justice? People are being released from prison based on DNA evidence that was unavailable 20 yrs ago. Now we will have the ability to point the finger at or away from anyone.

What an interesting comment. This thought did not cross my mind. Although the ability to do what you suggest is probably way down the road. I think they're looking at manipulating bacterial DNA. But I suppose it's something to keep in mind.

I have the same concerns regarding the unscrupulous fingerprinting done at airports. They could use them to plant evidence against anyone they chose to. Worrying.

Honestly, not too long ago I might have viewed your comment as bordering on the paranoid but acknowledged that it could be true. These days I'm not so quick to judge.

Much of law enforcement is similar to an arms race. Each side battling to come up with new ways to outsmart the other. The idea of the "protectors" becoming the antagonists is indeed worrying. But this has always been the case. That's why we have checks and balances. It's a deeply flawed and often ineffectual system but eventually it seems to work its way around to uncovering the facts. Succumbing to fear is a losing proposition.

That's okay AtlLib! I try to see things from all extremes, both the good and the bad, in trying to be prepared for the possibility of either.

These last years though, I seem to have had an increasingly uneasy worst-case-scenario feeling about a lot of things regarding surveillance and profiling etc, but, that's just me.

SciFi channel becomes Sci channel as bio-weapons animals become a reality. You were here, before the predator supersoldiers existed. Remember this time, when we were simply human beings.

Considering the front page stories bombarding us daily how could you not think otherwise? Through the governments use of fear expressly to manipulate us you have good reason to be cautious.

My first impulse was to discount your comment right off the bat as simply too far fetched to even consider. Then I thought of the "super athletes" we're producing.

There is a real indication of the kind of world we live in, when almost every time something like this is given to the public, the first reactions are almost always to think of the bad thing that we will use the discovery for, sad.
