If this were 1985 and the scientists were whites from South Africa, they'd probably be excluded from the competition as well. Because that's what we did back then, shunned white South Africans for the racist violence and oppression their government inflicted on generations of black Africans in the name of an ethnic majority state for the whites.

The exact same thing is going on in occupied Palestine.

Civilized people rejected South Africa and turned them into international pariahs and the embodiment of racist evil for what they were doing. Israel reached out to S.A. and kept up trade relations.

Israel also learned from S.A.'s experience, which is why it's illegal for Americans to boycott Israeli products/companies. But no, there's no pro-Israel lobby with it's claws sunk deep into America foreign policy. None whatsoever.

And let's not forget that Black South Africans who've been to the occupied territories say it's worse than what they suffered under Apartheid. The South African army never turned the full destructive power at it's disposal against them.
