egoldstein says: I've done a lot of writing about my perspective on ClipCast, but i just read some really insightful comments by ouyangwulong that said it better than i have been able to. Wanted to share them with everyone by clipping them. Thank you ouyangwulong. Not just for having such a positive perspective on it, but for truly tapping into and expressing the essence of what it's all about. It was truly a great feeling to read your comments. By the way, i'm eric goldstein on facebook. Would love to see the "other side" of your clips...friend me if you like Glad we're on the same page. I would offer to work for you guys, but my given name doesn't end in "eric" and I suck at computer programing. But a sly question: are you still using the traditional interface? Or are you using some slick trick I haven't figured out yet? I can't get the hyper-links in the comments to work in the clip casts, and I can't get my hypertext formatting to stick. (Could be I'm just typing the code wrong - that happens most of the time.) I just miss the emphatic use of Bold and Italics! I agree with you, Ouyangwulong. Clipmarks is now a step beyond. At the risk of sounding gaga, I'd even say revolutionary. you guys keep patting each others fannies and i'm gonna need a new screen! (seriously..how do i put one of those laughing/smiling little watchamacallits here to indicate just joking?) In that vein I also miss the counter that shows how many times a clip has been viewedme too, ouyangwulong. I hope the developers should bring it back soon. That's really important. otherwise, the classic view will never die. how do i put one of those laughing/smiling little watchamacallits here to indicate just joking? Not only you. . I dont know idem. could somebody explain? laughing/smiling little watchamacallits Unfortunately, we can't really add the smileys to the clipcast without screwing up the formatting of the comments. We tried relentlessly to get this to work, but flash (which the clipcast is written in) was not able to put the smiley in the right place without causing all sorts of confusing line breaks. Believe me, we worked at it and wanted it badly. We'll talk more about this on monday to see if we can come up with something, but i'm not very optimistic about it. Regarding the bar that makes it much easier to use bold, italics, etc., that is something we definitely plan to integrate soon. willhelm, the fact that we inspired you enough to use the word "gaga" brings tears to my eyes I haven't checked but does BBCode still work? it does if you type it in...the bar that makes it easy hasn't been put in yet...keyword being 'yet' We tried relentlesslyThat's good enough for me. Thanks Eric. I'm not much of a programmer either. It's gonna take some gettin' used to but all in all I've been enjoying learning. Progress not perfection here. ClipCast is beautiful (depends on the chosen skin or "theme"). But the aesthetic advance can't compensate for the loss of the following: Summary: ClipCast is good for my eyes; Clipmarks Classic is good for working (clipping, editing, commenting, searching). I customized my clipcast a little and my affection for it grew accordingly. With my eyes slowly deteriorating I need contrast and sharpness. I wish there were more fonts available but its not that big a deal. I've been workin and runnin and workin and runnin and haven't had much computer time lately. I am going to get a facebook account too, sometime, so look for me. I'll be your friend! Johanna, your observations about the differences between the way comments and remarks are handled in ClipCast and Classic View are definitely correct. We're going to brainstorm about how to improve remarks and comments in ClipCast, but i think this really boils down to the fact that Classic View is a full web site and ClipCast is a extension of that for enabling people to showcase their clips anywhere. It is simply unrealistic to think that the 'box' we created for showcasing your clips elsewhere could mirror the experience in Classic View. That said, in our Facebook app, we have implemented remarks and comments just like we treat them in Classic View...because there we have the room to wo... Thank you, Eric. (And that goes not only for your answer but also for the job you're doing.) Here's a thought - and I don't know how much of a pain in the ass it would be to do it, but it would be my solution: A butterfly format. I've thought about it a lot, and I think this would be the most comfortable way to integrate the clips and comments together in the same visual field. On the left you have a scrolling box with the clip, then from the right side (perhaps a collapsable pull-out window) you have the scrolling mirror window, this one showing the comments. Space can certainly be an issue for this, but I think another bonus would be that it would have a book-like feel, and for anyone who has seen my Facebook site (Austin M. Kramer) you may have noticed, I'm a little obsessed ... Actually, I would really like to add clips to clipcasts by clipping them. It's like meta clipping. I would like to see the functionality of the clipcast brought up to that of the classic and I think it can be done. Once that's in place, we can spread accross the web. I'm amazed by the way that clippers are cohering in Facebook already. If clipmarks can break free of its website and allow the community to roam, nomadic but intact accross the other sites of the web, this will be a revolution in internet organization and communication. Viva los Clipmarks! Hasta la Victoria Siempre! If clipmarks can break free of its website and allow the community to roam, nomadic but intact accross the other sites of the web, this will be a revolution in internet organization and communication.yep! As for your suggestions, all are noted and will be discussed in our team meeting monday morning to plan next steps. Is the ClipCast meant to replace the Classic-View-ClipMarks sometime? I can't do without the list of clips+Titles on the left side of the Player/Viewer, so that I can sift through the clips and open/play/view only those I want. That's essential if ones time is limited. In the ClipCast, this list is below the Player, and only part of the according clips are listed (I couldn't spot anything like "see the next 20 clips in this Cast"). The right side of the clip contains information that is not constantly needed, and takes less place than the clips-list. Maybe they could change places? I find myself switching to the classical view every time... But I find the ClipCast concept itself is great a... A suggestion: Player on left, as it is now. On its right the list of clips (in the form it is in the classical view now - scrollable, with link to further clips). The box with the clippers name+information and the box 'My Clip Casts", below the Player, but horizontally aligned ("My Clip Casts" on the right side of the Name+Information box). I don't know if this is a good thing (from a technical view) or if there are other arguments against it. Just wanted to present my point of view. splendidus: Is the ClipCast meant to replace the Classic - View - ClipMarks sometime?Definitely not. I find the ClipCast concept itself is great and perfect for embedding in other sites and "spread across the web" as ouyangwulong noted.Yep...that's exactly why we created it Woa, The whole site is hanging. I type a sentence and have to wait for it to appear. Clearing my cache makes no difference. But shouldn't the goal be to eventually replace the classic view with a perfected clip cast? I mean, of course now it's still growing, but eventually, couldn't clipcast take over? The thing that makes facebook so exciting to me is the applets. They are essentially programs run on the platform of a website, not a computer. Clipcast is applets that can be run on virtually any website. Why is this so important? Operating Systems. Essentially, an operating system is composed of three parts: 1. A search engine, which finds data on the hard drive and retrieves it when needed. 2. An interface, that allows us to interact with that data. 3. A platform that runs different interfaces so we can i... Eric, I've been reading yuor profile, and I did not know you're the CM co-founder. Oh! man... To bring together the random puzzle pieces of news that add up to what I'm talking about here. There's a lot of big moves being made in the internet industry these days, and they are all heading in a very interesting direction. I've also refined my thoughts on the importance of Clipcasts and the mobilized, diversified Clipmarks community in the Internet frontiers of Culture, Economy, and Politics here. I make this argument using a comparison with the Islamicization of modern Bangladesh, as explained in Richard Eaton's amazing book: [url=http://www.amazon.com/Frontier-1204-17... Oh no! This discussion has spilled over onto a whole bunch of clips, and it isn't complete on any single location! Whatever shall I do? Never fear! Create a ClipCast! Et, Voila! Hopefully, a discussion that can be continued to help keep us all on the cutting edge! Sorry, didn't link, trying again... Oh no! This discussion has spilled over onto a whole bunch of clips, and it isn't complete on any single location! Whatever shall I do? Never fear! Create a ClipCast! Et, Voila! Discussing AGI and Futuristic Computing All of those great, different ideas on computers and the future that we've been brewing up this week. Hopefully, a discussion that can be continued to help keep us all on the cutting edge! Oh man...you just get it!! I hope everyone checks out that ClipCast to get a sense of its power. Click here to see it...and realize that that clipcast can now be added to with the click of a mouse and embedded on any web site. Power indeed!! No kidding. Now I just need to be able to input my clips from print research as well, and I can organize all the information in my life! Also, hanging out with you guys on facebook, I am begining to discover exactly how many of us on Clipmarks are professional researchers, teachers and professors. Everyone I seem to run into here seems to be very very heavy into the information and knowledge industry. Despite the fact that it got labeled a "social networking site" it is also one of the most important new professional research and debate tools out there. Ouyang, would you like me to set your praising texts to an oratorium? Which title would you prefer? I promise, my arias and chorals could deepen the audience's euphoria about digitalization of culture and its dissociation from the human subject. Actually, I would prefer the title: "Du Dunkelheit, aus der ich stamme" I'm looking forward to hearing it. Oh ye dawns! With your glamour so many days began, which at the end perished, each in its own specific night! Tearing off one calendar sheet after the other, humans, if having a light in their skull, detect to have clipped themselves on another cast-iron mirage again. So angestrengt wider die starke Nacht Point taken, but... It's ironic that this clever exchange of poetry, taking place through the forum of clipmarks, would seem to suggest that we are all involved in something deeper? I certainly dismiss many clippers as shallow and seeking diversion, just as you suggest, but there is a core of people who do seem to use this as a tool to provoke civilized exchange of ideas. And is it not better to be well informed? An opinion supported by evidence is infinitely better than shrill confirmation of ones own pejorative bias. In America there is often a "Don't confuse me with the facts!" attitude, and there is a reduction of information down to disposable sound bites. Bush says one thing today ... But by collecting evidence and organizing our observations we can oppose the streams of propagandaIn theory. BUT only until said evidence and observations are deleted (or privatized) when and if they don't suit the owner of the clip. (Regarding the comment section at least.) I could, in theory of course, go in and delete any comment on any one of my clios, if I don't "like" it. I can pretty much "filter" the truth to my own taste. I can change the context of the exchange between clippers. The possibilities are endless! Don't you just LOVE the new "delete comment" option? I'm being sarcastic of course, but my humour seems to shwoooosh right over the heads of so many, so I thought I'd better make that clear. I do NOT like the way the "delete comment" button is "changing" CM and clips. Literally!! If we are to get to place you seem to think we already are at OW, then getting rid of that option is essential IMO. I do NOT like the thought of one's comments and words standing for all time, "out of context" on clips, because of selective and biased post-"editting". We are FAR from being as "well-informed" as we could be, without that option. There's along way to go IMO. Wait, so I'm confused about this anyway... Can I delete clips if there has already been activity on them? I've had some clips come up as "deleted" but they aren't really, it seems to just be a temporary server problem integrating the two systems. For instance, some of my clips do that, but they come up in clipcast just fine. I also haven't explored the delete comments button. I'll agree, I don't know if it's totally cool, but on the other hand, it does provide a way to get rid of offensive comments meant to belittle or intimidate other people, so it might encourage us all to say whatever we have to say nicely. And finally, I should distinguish from the clip-core v. the clip peripherey. i ... Can I delete clips if there has already been activity on them? No, but you can privatize (hide) them if you don't like the way the comments are heading. It they don't "suit you".You can delete any comment on a clip of yours you like, abusive or not. most clippers wouldn't stoop to that level [...] they just leave. Not all. NO names mentioned, but I think more than a few clippers know what I am eluding to. Are there really that many offensive comments on CM that we really need that option, so open to abuse? Not in my opinion. the clip-core v. the clip peripherey Ouyang, I luv U. ________________________ This↓ is a non-authoritative request from the periphery, which I'd like to direct to the Great ClipCast Fathers' Center: Would it be very laborious to change the code for the clip titles, concerning the acceptance of charsets beyond ASCII? (See my test clips Test: à à À À α α α α ñ ñ ñ ñ and [url=http://clipmarks.com/clipmark/067D1A38-CDC6-45BC-A9A6-E4EA9129F477/]Display of Umlaute (ä, ö, ü, Ä, Ö, Ü) and other special chars (e.g. ß) in ClipCast clip titles[/url... Oh, actually I want that too! I've been having trouble clipping in Asian languages, and the clip casts don't like that! and I luv u too Johanna G. Also, my arguments for clipmarks aside, I am currently brooding over the infiltration of spam, which seems to make your point perfectly. GRRR. But I figure as long as we all argue about everything as much as possible (and in as civilized a way as possible) then we can't go wrong. Just challenge everything! But then TN has a point, because deleting inconvenient commentary robs the clip format of it's sparkling ability to challenge any and every opinion. I don't know that I like this. Couldn't we just have a report user button instead? By t... At any rate, I want more interaction with comments in general. I take a clippers comments more seriously than their pops, and sometimes more seriously than their clips! Dirish, for instance, is a great commentator. But it's hard to keep track of him because he doesn't clip much. |
