zasel says: I do not doubt the courage of these heroic soldiers who are asking to be sent back into active duty, and sometimes combat after losing a limb(s) in the Iraq war. But isn't it kinda interesting how the military says ALL of our soldiers have talents and abilities that are needed and if an amputee wants to remain on active duty, or combat, and they are able to do so, they will be sent back, and yet at the same time, they see fit to discharge interpreters, translators, combat personnel etc, simply for being gay? It's extremely interesting, zasel. The blatant discrimination is against gays pathetic, particularly in light of this push to retain war amputees due to the shortage of soldiers. As a former member of the U.S. Navy, and being Married to a U.S. Air Force Recruiter I think that allowing amputees back on active duty is an awesome thing. But it's not new, in 1994 during a skydiving demonstration with the army's golden knights Dana Bowman lost both legs in a collision with another skydiver, he lost one above the knee the other below the knee. In nine months he returned to active duty, becoming the first double amputee to sky dive into his reenlistment ceremony. So it's not a new thing, it just happens more often. As for individuals who are gay in the Military, They have been allowed in the military for years. Some time in the late eighties or early nineties the mil... Stedler, I take no exception to anything you say in your comment, however, it is important to remember that the "Dont' ask don't tell" policy is wrong on several levels. The most important being that why should someone have to lie about or deny who they are in order to serve in the military? Israel, which has one of the most "macho" armies in world, permits gays to openly serve. As do most other countries at this point in time. The U.S, though, which is the leading military in the world, continues to discriminate, degrade and delegitimitize the service of its gay members by insisting the deny or lie about who they are. This, in my opinion, is shameful. |
