AtlLiberal says:
One statistic that stood out to me was the strange 1 in 5 self professed atheists that claim to believe in God. Atheism is conventionally defined as holding no belief in a god or gods.

The article goes on to explore certain other traits held by people and and some have a decided liberal slant to them:

Nearly two-thirds of respondents favored more government help for
the poor, even if it meant going deeper into debt. Sixty-one percent of
respondents also said “stricter environmental laws and regulations are
worth the cost.”
A majority said the United States should pay
more attention to problems at home than those abroad, but in the area
of foreign policy, 6 out of 10 respondents said that diplomacy, not
military strength, was the best way to ensure peace.
Makes you wonder why the Washington neocons are so powerful. Could it be the Military/In...

70 percent of the unaffiliated said they believed in God, including one of every five people who identified themselves as atheist and more than half of those who identified as agnostic.
I don't get it.

If 70% of the unaffiliated believe in god, what are the remaining 30% of the unaffiliated? I'm thinking atheist or agnostic. (Otherwise they'd be in the 70% group.)

If 1 in 5 (20%) are atheist, of the unaffiliated group, that leaves 10% agnostic. Where does the "more than half" come from?

Or, it could be interpreted as 1 of 5 atheists believes in god, which also doesn't make sense.

Seems this begs more questions than it answers.

A quote from the AP:
"The survey shows religion in America is, indeed, 3,000 miles wide and
only three inches deep," said D. Michael Lindsay, a Rice University
sociologist of religion.
I have to admit that this sentiment gives me encouragement. IMA, the less dependence we give to superstition and dogma the more we can concentrate on issues and rational ways to solve them.

These surveys are so far fetched, I really question the accuracy of them. One survey claims "96% of Americans believe in God", this claims some 70% do, it's really all up to what one's opinion of what "God" even means.

Many people I've talked with claim some sort of "spirituality" but don't seem able to articulate exactly what this encompasses. A certainty is that churches are losing members. Religion in America seems to be entering a "define your own belief age" yet the Walmarts of religion such as Falwell and Robertson seem to exert a large influence on the public's perception and usually in a negative manner.

Oh definitely, especially Robertson. I used to love watching him until I heard him blatantly call for the assination of Chavez, and then when he got called out on the carpet for it he retracted and even lied. I've never watched him since, it was despicable.
