ouyangwulong says: This raises the next important question: is China's economic growth real or just a neo-liberal fantasy? Friedman and others have said that China is catching up to the US, but is that really the case? Certainly, they are making money, but without a free and dynamic society, it seems to me that it will be impossible for China to ever take the lead. It will continue to make money as the world's factory for a bit, but eventually it will become to expensive and the jobs will move elsewhere. To survive that transition, (which even America is struggling with right now) the country will have to step forward with innovations and new ideas of their own. I don't believe China is ready to do this, nor will it be in the forseeable future. Thus, the idea of a "flat" world is a dangerous day dream. China's rapid development is a siren song luring the greedy but not savy into an investment disaster. Another one Austin? (Marked for future commenting I think the Chinese are a very prominent people in the world today. They will be a cornerstone of our Type 1 civilization and are developing in areas that other parts of the world ignore. Their cultural background will bring a sense of discipline to our world society. If given the opportunity, they will bring great scientific discoveries to the table. They will be vital in developing methods of population controls and sustainability. The communistic ideals that they represent will be a vital piece of the planetary governing society. As our world population stabilizes the Chinese will be a vital part of the planetary workforce to make things happen. I, myself, am grateful for their potential. I would love to live in the world you describe, skwirlinator (or at least, I think I would) but I'm not sure it isn't a little to optimistic. The reality of China, from my point of view here on the ground, is really worrisome. There is tremendous emphasis on getting rich and social climbing, but little logic behind it. New companies are opened every day without any competitive advantage or necessity. Their existence is perpetuated through the support of connections and back room deals, but they could not compete if they weren't shielded by government protectionism and corruption. A particularly potent example: real estate. In Beijing new sky scrapers are built every week. They are built by... In a more direct response, be careful not to Orientalize China, by presuming their culture grants them some ancient wisdom that the west is somehow lacking. The Chinese are no more mystical than Europe, even though in the west we know less about them. After all, Europe and the Middle East also have ancient cultures, just ask any Greek or Persian. Everyone in the world imagines a paradise somewhere beyond their borders. They imagine a country scientifically advanced, steeped in mystical ancient wisdom, where people are young, healthy, happy and smart and money flows freely to anyone who wants it. This is Shangri-la. Many Chinese people imagine that Shangri-la is America. Many in America ima... |
