Desde ese momento, con gran sorpresa suya, todo cambió en su vida. Logró un rápido ascenso, se hizo cada vez más rico, obtuvo grandes honores y, antes de su muerte, llegó a ser cónsul, con abundante dinero y bienes. Desde que se liberó de su alma ya no tuvo consideraciones ni humanidad. Actuó sin escrúpulos, preocupándose únicamente del lucro y del éxito. Para él el hombre ya no contaba nada. Él mismo ya no tenía alma.
