It was the first nation to effectively end slavery, in 1805. But it was a wreck, a testimony to the utter wasting of its people by colonial powers; the USA either removed by force or escorted under protection (depending on who's telling the story) its President as recently as 2004. It has been almost completely deforested since 1920.
