If a rise of merely 1 degree celsius can precipitate such a chain of events, just imagine what our world will be like after a rise of the 3˚C predicted for this century. One degree may seem like nothing to us humans, but a lot of animals and plants and sea creatures especially, are incredibly sensitive to even a slight change in temperature. The sex of a lot of amniote vertebrates (turtles f.ex.) are temperature-dependent and as little as 1-2 degrees change can determine whether the eggs turn out male or female hatchlings. Some corals are extremely sensitive too. I daren't begin think of the havoc a 3 degree change could reek. It's sad that so many ignore these important signs. |
