Be sure to read the rest of the article; it is quite fascinating.

It's also interesting to note that one of the related articles listed on the side is titled "Smarter People Are No Better Off"!

I'm an only...so what does that make me? :~)

That being said, I can see it in my first-born son and first-born grandson. It's scary. They were/are driven to excel. I'm not sure that makes them happier people though.

I'm a first born and I think we are more intelligent because our hide is on the line. First borns fall victim to their parents' ignorance in child rearing and we get our ass kicked more often and suffer more emotional distress because first-time parents make a lot of bad choices. Their ignorance generates misunderstandings from both sides. So the first born has to mature more quickly if only to keep his/her mental health. I'm married to a frist born and the first thing we decided upon was not to ever have any children because of our own personal experience, both of us coming from large families.

I seriously suspect with this theory.
I'm the first child in my family, and I have a young brother. He is smarter than me.He got higher points in the exams, and he entered the famous college, now, he won a wonderful job! But me, still struggle for the master.
And look around me, my classmate, She also has a younger brother. They study in the same subject. She told me her brother learn fast and well than her.
Maybe it is not who is the first in the family, it is who is the boy in the family then who get higher rank in the family. In china, it is always like this:boys are the focus in the family while girls are the ignored ones.

This was an interesting post,of course we have to remember that the majority of first time parents spend more time, teaching there 1st born , when another child comes along normally they have less time at the early stages of learning and quite often have had to go back to work this must be another factor not mentioned.

I am, like sturgeon, an only too. We have a totally different perspective on everything (untainted by all of that sibling stuff) which I personally cherish!

I also agree with bocifius, that we get our asses kicked by first time parents learning the ropes of child rearing.

Actually, each position in the birth order holds it's own perils. However, I prefer the first born - we rock!
