Robots to take jobs that will allow humans to have more free time to take jobs? That doesn't make sense. I'm all for the advance of technology and the expansion of robotics, but someday someone is going to have to figure out how people fit into the equation as more and more jobs are lost to automation. Then there is the problem of robots getting smarter than us at some point and deciding they're a bit tired serving us. As the workforce slowly slips into retirement there will be fewer and fewer people to do the jobs that are demanded. Longer waiting times, over-worked staff and short-tempers are in the future. Robotics is the logical step towards freeing up people from manufacturing jobs to work in the services industry. As the baby-boomers die off there will be a steady increase of surplus as robotics continue to produce for a slower population growth. Prices on goods will fall as costs of services will increase. IMO You'll have to pardon my cynicism on prices falling because production got cheaper ... Aren't we having a problem with unemployment now? Increased robotics is only going to remove job opportunities. Many like to call the unemployed lazy or blame them for their lack of work, but with even more jobs lost to automation you are just begging for a welfare society. You'll have to pardon my cynicism on prices falling because production got cheaperOk, but you misunderstood me. I suggested that prices will fall because there will be fewer and fewer people demanding the products. Robotics will enable production past the need and a surplus will lower those prices. Once the baby boomers start dying off there will be less people in the workforce and less products being sold in mass. Eventually it will even out but automated production will provide a cost efficient easy resupply as soon as demand increases. Services will skyrocket as we seek to fill positions with any labor possible. Increased robotics is only going to remove job opportunitiesIn the short-term I agree wholeheartedly. In 2025 I will be 66yo and I am near the end of the babyboomers. Given the median age of the babyboomers alive today most will be in their 80's or 90's by then. Who will make the Spacely Space Sprokets when we are gone? A few thoughts on this tho ... those baby boomers had children, so the population has grown exponentially by them. Even with their eventually passing the population isn't going to decrease, but continue to grow as thier children procreate (assuming we are limiting the population talk to just the US). There isn't a whole lot that slows population production other than sickness. A lack of job just gives more time to make babies. People complain about welfare recipients, but I'm wondering if the current direction our nation is taking isn't just going to create a welfare nation. The article discussed robotics in Japan, but once they are established I can see them easily being put to use in Am... I'm in a job right now because my former employer bumped me out due to my age and my productivity. I went almost a year before I found a job in my area at 1/4 of the pay I was making. I consider this current job a stepping stone to something better but 6 mos in I'm not finding anything local. I am slowly going under and that is just trying to maintain my normal monthly utilities and such. Its tough to live in our society right now. I feel your anxiety. I live what you fear. Stay at your current job until you find something better and make sure you check out why there is an opening before you climb into a new position. Make sure there is job security. Good Luck! Wait - don't robots already do the work of 3.5 million people? |
