jetcloud says: Eventually, Chief Almir Narayamoga Surui envisions many of the 1,200 members of his Surui tribe using computers with satellite Internet connections and high-resolution images from Google Earth to police all corners of their 618,000-acre reservation. They could then offer proof to authorities that the destruction is occurring and demand action, or possibly spook the loggers and miners away because they would know they are being monitored, said Surui, who uses his tribes' name as his last, like many Brazilian Indians. Couple things... How cool to see a monstrous corporation like Google be proactive in a more aggressive way. I checked out their "highlight" of the Darfur region. It actually becomes more real to see an image of the place...the dirt. Also, I have been a logger, with horses and behind a small forwarder. A good harvest is a good thing. Butchery is butchery. A forest is not a field. Clearcutting creates an unfortunate monoculture that benefits only a few critters well suited to slash and scorched earth. Etc. Nice one. It's about time we have some more militant Natives! Native Americans have always been the respecters guardians of mother earth ... great to see that they can use technology to help in their fight |
