BobbyRutan says: Will Americans choose to lead the world, or will they once again squander the goodwill that the world would love to heap on the USA. What will they do? The countries most optimistic that an Obama presidency would improve relations were America's NATO allies, including Australia (62 per cent). I notice 4 in 10 did not take a position. Isn't that like in this country most polls showing them in a dead heat (the undecideds will decide the election)? Besides, the rest of the world won't have to live with the policies, taxes, regulations, etc., etc. that will be imposed on U.S. citizens, regardless of who gets elected. We U.S. citizens will, so personally, I don't care how many polls are taken overseas, I'm the one that will have to decide who I can live with. That's like polling a city population for whom you should marry and where you should live. Not relevant. Typical, satchmo--the rest of the world doesn't exist if you're an 'Murrikan. Broaden you perspective a tad, mate! Oh yeah...let me decide who to vote for based on what France, Russia and Europe think...lunacy pop! Call me crazy but I think it's because they don't want more wars and cowboy diplomacy aka more wars. Just a crazy, insane thought there. I know it's nuts, but please let me say something in my insanity. Good thing we have the First Amendment you know, 'cause otherwise I would be labeled a communist traitor, then spied on, and put in jail for my crazy thoughts. Pheewww Sparling's law and many other moronic rebubbacans: "If it's good for the world it's got to be bad for America". No wonder we find ourselves where we are after 27 of the last 39 years under rebubbacan Presidents. Xenophobia squared @Satchamo It's as if you don't know how much weight America has to throw around in the world. Xenophobia squaredNo xenophobia, I just don't give a damn what the popular choice is from the EU, Russia and France. What is wrong with the fact that I don't think these people have/share the same values as I? Unlike most liberals, I am not ashamed of my country. We make mistakes, but overall I believe we have honorable intentions. It's tough being the leader of the free world... I'm not ashamed of my country. I'm ashamed of the ignorant rebubbacans. Invading other countries on a pack of lies is not honorable. Luanching an invasion that resulted in over 1,500,000 Iraqi dead is not honorable. Never has been. It keeps you from being able to lead the world. The world is not as blind as the citizens of our country who continue to be duped by rebubbacans. And sparling when you already listed the EU there is no need to list France again. France is part of the EU. This is what I am talking about when I talk about ignorant rebubbacans. It's tough being the leader of the free world...I'll say. It's considerably tougher now than it was eight years ago. Someone once said "If you want to know if you're a leader, turn around and see if anyone's following." Like so many conservative mantras, "I don't give a damn what other countries think" sounds rugged and virtuous. But does anyone want to follow a leader who doesn't give a damn what they think? Would you want to work for someone who didn't give a damn what you think? Would you follow a candidate who you were sure didn't give a damn about what Americans like you thought? America is less of a leader than it was before Bush - fewer people are willing to fol... Would you follow a candidate who you were sure didn't give a damn about what Americans like you thought? That's the whole point, Masbuury, this isn't about what Americans think, it's about what the world thinks. When 80% of France like Obama for president, then I know to vote for the other candidate. And sparling when you already listed the EU there is no need to listReally, Bob, thanks for pointing that out you elitist snob. There is every reason to list France again because they are the epitome of WEAKNESS and ELITISM and I'm tired of their hatred of the US because we bailed their asses out of 2 world wars. I would rather they just say thank you everyday that they're not speaking German as their national language and then shut their Socialist mouths! Never forget you historically challenged moron that there would be no U.S. of A. without French assistance. I believe that sufficiently counters any U.S. aid in World War I and II. It's hysterical that the U.S. was only 3 votes from speaking German as it's own national language. I'd rather be educated and accurate than being a rebubbacan who engages his mouth before he engages his brain anyday. The world is full of "educated" idiots, Bob. The fact that you have to constantly remind yourself and others that you believe yourself "educated" is unattractive and pompous. No more unattractive and laughable than you who has no grasp of history regarding who bailed the U.S.A. out of a period of darkness and uncertainty giving them freedom and liberty. Nothing is more unattractive then your xenophobia. Yes, France helped us during the American Revolution, but it was only to forward their own interests. Remember, we may call it the Revolution, but in reality it turned into a world war between England & France. We were just the sideshow. I think we've more than repaid them, World War I & II. I repeat, I don't care who they think ought to be our President, they won't have to pay the taxes, live by the laws & regulations, I will. I thought that was what our country was founded upon, "our" ability to decide who gets to be in Congress & President--not someone across the sea. You keep concentrating on France. Remember the poll was the "world", quit picking your personal quibbles. Regardless of the reason the French were who was there in our hour of need. You also seem to forget that in 1991 the French were our 2nd largest contributor of forces in Desert Storm.....but it would be inconvenient for you to remember that. No one ever said that anybody but Americans would be casting a ballot to say otherwise is ridiculous. What it reflects is that it would validate the "American dream" that people can come to our shores, contribute, be successful, and that regardless of their origin, their children may one day aspire to be President of our country and leader of the ... It's all good because every time something like this hits the mainstream media, it does nothing but increase Sara Palin's popularity and steel the resolve of our center-right majority... First off it's Sarah.... not Sara..... If you are going to idolize someone get it right. I guess you all just dumped Grandpa into the shitter. Steels the ignorant to believe that we live someplace seperate from the world. My ancestor came here as an indentured servant, fought in the Revolutionary War, got his indenture extended because he fought in the Revolution. Came to MO. for the land after the Louisiana Purchase, bought 640 acres for $500 & cleared it & settled it. Had 11 children, they all succeeded, maybe they didn't become millionaires, but they own their homes, go to their jobs and eventually have a pretty good retirement. Most of the family is still located somewhere in the Midwest. Each generation or so has sent sons to the military or war. If I don't care what the poll states about the rest of the world, I feel the family has done its part and is still doing it. We came for the American dream. We still have it. This poll in no way changes the American dream or prevents an American from leading our country and doing what's best for the vast majority of Americans. It does point out that we have a candidate who would be favorable received by the rest of the world. It is much easier to lead the rest of the world when you are liked rather than despised. George Bush's father is an example of a person who was successful in coalition building while his son W is the example of someone who squandered the world's good will and chose to go it alone. The results could not say more about which is a better option. Once again we have a chance to have a leader who inspires the world. Yet in America we have become... Hello BobbyRutan, I'm a little late to this discussion, but this morning I got interested in a NYTimes magazine article titled "When Judges Make Foreign Policy". It talks about how the United States Supreme Court has made and continues to make decisions that have a great impact on domestic and foreign policy. I don't know why so many people insist on putting down any idea that we Americans should not be at all concerned about what the rest of the world thinks about us. I, personally, can't wait until Barak Obama takes the oath of office, and we as Americans head in a new direction that makes us all proud! I recently viewed Obama's speech in Germany in front of 200 thousand Germans. In this... Thank you schreibe. I look forward to that day myself. I actually spent an evening as a server at a private gathering at a household where George and Laura Bush were 2 of the 6 people making up the group (the chef and myself not included). I had the opportunity to spend the entire evening inspecting the person who would become "leader" of the free world. I can't tell you how thoroughly unimpressed I was. Laura was very gracious however. Being in the presence of greatness is something that will send shivers down your spine. I left that house that evening feeling like I had served dinner to just another individual born into fortunate circumstances who had very little appreciation for others a... BobbyRutan, Sure is interesting that you got so close to "seat of power", so to speak. Sounds like you may be living and working in the Wash. D.C. area. I recently got a great tour of D.C. compliments of my son who has been working there for several years. As a returned "Peace Corps" volunteer, he made D.C. his home. I could see Capital, and most of the monuments from his 8th floor condo. It was the first time I've toured the area since high school....about 50 years ago. It is all still very impressive, and inspirational. For the most part, I have not lost hope that this country can regain its leading role in the world. My favorite was FDR's memorial. The "New Deal", and Roosevelt's conce... Arguing with a rightwing mind is like trying to screw a blown light bulb into a socket. No matter how many times you screw, the light will not and I repeat WILL NOT come on. One thing that amazes me though, is how the republican kingpins, use the same worn-out rhetoric and their followers or "base" (these kingpins like the word base better, it makes it sound like their flocks are sticking together on principle not fear)...swallow the droopy, exhausted crock, time and time again, without ever THINKING to themselves... "Well, Gosh darn it, I think I've heard this before and look at the shitter it got me in." No, THINKING is out for the republican base, that is why someone like Sarah Palin,... |
