righthand says: The US ambassador to Paraguay, Robert White, feared that the US connection to Condor might be publicly revealed at a time when the assassination in the USA of Chilean former minister Orlando Letelier and his American assistant Ronni Moffitt was being investigated. White cabled that "it would seem advisable to review this arrangement to insure that its continuation is in US interest." This demonstrates that the US facilitated communications for Operation Condor, and has been called by J. Patrice McSherry (Long Island Univ.) "another piece of increasingly weighty evidence suggesting that U.S. military and intelligence officials supported and collaborated with Condor as a secret partner or sponsor." It has been argued that while the US was not a key member, it "provided organizational, intelligence, financial and technological assistance to the operation." Terribly important. The US government will not be reformed until a broader understanding of its crimes penetrates American culture. Publishers tend to write non-controversial (thus easily sold) text books, resulting in de facto censorship of the dark side of American history. That's why saying it in forums like CM is so crucial. There was another scandal next week. Another flood of horror the week after that. No evidence (till now, perhaps). No real ability to document the evils, raise one's voice or, even then, to push for political change. It would all be laughed off or brushed off...another loony 'conspiracy theory." Since even the laws are broken, new laws won't even help: We need to elect better leaders and hope for the best. To be a bit of a Devil's Advocate her... I keep wondering how many of these historical details would have been anywhere near the public domain 10, or even 5 years ago. I'm sure many of the crimes committed were done so with the presumption that with 'evidence' and witnesses destroyed, they would leave the scene clean. The 'Perfect crime' apart from supposed rumours and conjecture. Then came the internet. It's potency could not have been imagined. There was too much evidence that was ignored due to to hubris, It takes one copy of a document, picture, statement, and it can be duplicated and be around the world in seconds. Tallied with supporting and conflicting evidence, and seen by anyone who can remember other accounts to contribu... |
