thisnamecantbetaken says: I would pick Monsanto. No contest. On March 11 a new documentary was aired on French television - a documentary that Americans won’t ever see. The gigantic bio-tech corporation Monsanto is threatening to destroy the agricultural biodiversity which has served mankind for thousands of years.http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=6262083407501596844 The list: AIG: Money for Nothing Cargill: Food Profiteers Chevron: "We can't let little countries screw around with big companies" Constellation Energy: Nuclear Operators CNPC: Fueling Violence in Darfur Dole: The Sour Taste of Pineapple GE: Creative Accounting Imperial Sugar: 13 Dead Philip Morris International: Unshackled Roche: "Saving Lives is Not Our Business" How could Blackwater not make this list? Greed is the common theme. And I agree about Blackwater. Guess it shows how bad the others must be. Screw monsanto. I say we push open- source bio-tech, starting with public university research departments and http://seedsavers.org If only it were that easy. Seed banks are good, but there's still the risk of genetic contamination and cross-breeding with GMO's, before saving or after planting. (Intentional or not.) Some farmers have already lost seeds their families have cultivated for generations, because of GMO contamination. Monsanto and the likes are a threat to all and will be for millennia, if not forever. At least AIG, Blackwater et al can be stopped here and now, if we so choose. The GMO's that have been let loose, can't be taken back. Messing with evolution, especially when the motive is mostly, if not purely for profit, does not bode well for the future. You are right, tn. Modified seeds scare the hell out of me, and are high on the list of reasons I'm glad I'm as old as I am. One of the primary goals of agriculture is yields. Food that is not even modified has a yield formula in order to be marketed and consumed on a mass scale. Without hybrid corn or wheat for example, the USA would have little to export or consume domestically. Like nuclear power, modified seeds need to be grown and processed carefully. It's one thing to imagine a productive world without risk or corporate profit taking but tell Americans that they face hardship and price rises by omitting industry that puts food on their table and they'll have nothing to do with it. |
