It was the same in Russia, BBW and even though I'm not an expert on Italy and can't explain why there, in Russia it was purely from economical standpoint, or lack in that area.

Kids (both men & women) lived at home until getting married, because it's was almost impossible to get your own apartment (remember, nobody had their own houses, except for the party few) and even after they got married, a lot of times they'd wind up staying with the inlaws on one of the sides, simply because you couldn't obtain your own place to live. Moving to another city was not an option typically and getting an apartment was impossible, unless one had some serious connections or waited for years.
