But I recommend everyone: please buy and do read all of Eisner's graphic novels. He (passed away in January 2005) was the genius of American comics and in his works you can find the "human elements" of the American history and the Jewish culture with all its great and warm details. Especially "A Contract With God", "The Building", "Dropsie Avenue", "Fagin the Jew", "To the Heart of The Storm" and "The Invisible People" are highly recommended. I've only read "To the Heart of the Storm" and "Invisible People"--Ioved "Storm", but Invisible People felt a little thin. Maybe I just wasn't in the mood for such depressing stories. Six years ago, I saw "To The Heart of the Storm" at a bookstore and Eisner's powerful story-telling style struck me with the first pages I browsed there. Then I spent a little fortune in summer 2000 to buy (almost) all available books of him (and it's worth every penny of it). You're right, "Invisible People" is a little "lite" when compared to others but it still has powerful images. I think you'd love "Dropsie Avenue"; it tells the fascinating story of a neighborhood throughout the last four centuries with striking details from the American history. Also, I recommend "Family Matters" and "City People Notebook" (though the latter's style is different than other Eisner works.) Will Eisner... |
