Nice bite-sized 'answers'. Philosophically, I am sure someone can do a better job than me in asking whether the question has any logical meaning. Psychologically, it seems to come from the same place as comments like "everything happens for a reason", "God is working his purpose out" (a dirgeful hymn i had to sing as a kid) and elaborate metaphysical postulates of omega points, second comings (all right in their place), and the becoming One with the Universal Mind scheduled to begin in 2012. For me: This Is It.

Does the Universe Have a Purpose?
Yes, if we give it one.

@wildcat. It was news to me until a couple of days ago. I went to a site from the clip Mind of God and found it there, then mooched around and found that loads of people know about it. Apparently, all the evidence, some in code, from Nostradamus onwards proves that 2012 is the year when we will develop our 'light bodies'. It is an incredible new field to me and I can only suggest you do a search. I am glad you were ignorant of it too cos I felt really daft.

The Galaxy has an axis along the horizontal plane that Sol will pass through on 20 Dec 2012 (give or take a few days.) The Mayan calender finishes in 2012, and has been considered to be the end of an Age. Why? Maybe we'll find out when it happens. Harmonics plays an intricate part in the mechanism of universal development, in that it creates order from chaos. While this is may be hard to relate, from our present viewpoint, the axis will only be crossed once.
The way people act, the universe, as we know it may just be an isolation tank/quarantine until humanity, (or any other 'intelligent' species evolved) learns the the difference between knowledge, and wisdom. They say a little knowledge is...

The folks at CoastToCoastAM, (the current incarnation of what Art Bell started) have talked a quite a bit about the 2012 date. I have listened to the show on the drive home after bar closing.

I think we can agree that human knowledge is limited to human knowledge. Human knowledge is limited by human human knowledge. The limits of human knowledge are circumscribed by human knowledge. To claim that human knowledge is 'little' compared to what it does not know but may discover within the limits of its knowing capability is fine. I am not clear how we can say human knowledge is little compared to a knowledge that we do not know about. I am unclear why God should be given an attribute of knowledge, or, indeed, any human attribute.

How about this for an answer:

"What is this 'purpose' of which you speak?, or Please define your terms."

I'll answer your question with a question:

"Should it?"

Since I am part of the universe I can answer that. I do have a purpose. The universes purpose is to learn everything it can about itself.

Since everthing there is, is part of the universe then everything I learn is part of my purpose.

Perhaps our entire universe is but a single cell in the embryo of a cosmic egg, yet to be born, a slave to a master race, being purposely bred for the labor of our experience.

Or, perhaps we, like everything else in the universe, is but food for higher forms of life. Much like the way we breed cattle for slaughter.

Every thing that lives requires food; even the gods. Do we really think we're at the top of the universal food chain? Every living thing becomes food for the higher, or the lower; but food nonetheless.

The universe eats its children. Everything to which it has given life....it has eaten!

And ye shall eat the flesh of your sons, and the flesh of your daughters shall ye eat...

I was blushing when I wrote it. At one time I thought it to be a serious consideration. I thought our souls (at that time I believed we had one) was just food for higher souls.

I thought Nature continued up the spiritual ladder, so nothing much changed except the degree of development in sentient beings. But the rules... the food chain, was an endless fractal that developed the way Nature develops.

The big fish eat the little fish; the little fish eat the smaller fish, up the scale and down.

And so god loves us the way we love food. One consciousness consumes another.

But there was the possibility that "we can ...

Ah, but don't you see? That's precisely also the purpose of the universe! The fractal. It produces us, it consumes us (we die), and it makes shit (we decompose).

From that shit, something ELSE is produced (or allowed to eat), and everything has the same cycle, even unto heaven!

The final destination of the universe:

There shall come in the last days scoffers, walking after their own lusts, And saying, Where is the promise of his coming? for since the fathers fell asleep, all things continue as [they were] from the beginning of the creation. For this they willingly are ignorant of, that by the word of God the heavens were of old, and the earth standing out of the water and in the water: Whereby the world that then was, being overflowed with water, perished: But the heavens and the earth, which are now, by the same word are kept in store, reserved unto fire against the day of judgment and perdition of ungodly men. But, beloved, be not ignorant of this one thing,...
