But the bad old days were as bad as could be. It would be a fair estimate (some say even 300% higher and maybe they are right) -- but it would be a fair estimate to think about 22-million Native Americas were killed in the initial European invasions and subsequent conquest of The West.

For what it's worth today I'll add some evils to your list of evil.

1. Make John Wayne movies. (no joke). Most Americans would be horrified to think their nation was established on the backs of 22-million dead in genocide; instead we're all fed the John Wayne myths of the story.

2. Divide and conquer the natives (like Hamas vs. the PA). Get some on your side. Use them to fight the others. Get them involved in your own European or U.S. wars (French & Indian war; American revolution; Civil War, etc.)

3. Promise them political power and land if they cooperate and help out they betray them in the end (172 -177 broken treaties....not to mention early promises of Native Tribes having seats in the initial U.S. Senate, etc.)

4. Demonize them.

5. Denigrate them. Try to teach the survivors to abandon their culture and language and adopt the ways of the conquerer.

6. Pretend that you're offering them something good: like 'civilization," or better government, or wonderful Christianity and salvation.

It's not a pretty story. It nice that we live side by side much better these days. And although some Natives might still actually be in a state of war in mind or actions, and have valid issues and broken treaties that need redress, there doesn't seem to be much hate in their hearts; in fact I'd say there is more daily concern for healing rather than hate.

What a difference...people wanting healing rather than inflaming hate.

Another difference can be big: What we do today. The abuses of the past do not have to be repeated.

We can not change the past but we can change the attitudes and policies of today.
