chestnut501 says: Despite the media's surprise, it happens all the time. The truth of the matter here is that unless someone paid this man's past due and current bill, his heat would have been shut off anyway. period. TIP If you don't have heat in the winter months or your heat is about to be shut off, here's what to do. Go down to the Salvation Army, St. Vinnie's or even a resale shop and pick up a good telephone answering machine. You should have one anyway by now to deal with those pesky bill collectors. Call a Realtor, put your house up for sale and ask for a little more than it's worth. Tell your realtor you won't be living in the house while its up for sale and there isn't a phone where you'll be staying but you will be in and out of the house a lot mov... In the real Michigan world, utilities shot up over 25% last month thanks to stupid legislation to "green" our grid. In the state with the worst economy and real unemployment topping 20%, they have raised taxes, fees, utilities and insurance. We are only 1 of 5 states that charge full sales tax-6%-on our full utility bill, including the "delivery charge" and customer account fee. Our rates have been raised at least 3 times in the past 2 years and once the year before. Everyone in this state is struggling-and has been for over 5 years-and the state just keeps piling more hurt on us to keep the taxes flowing. Poor man. Is it any more of a tragedy that he was a WWII veteran? I'm glad you said that Jorjor, because that was one of my first thoughts when I read the article. If the poor guy didn't have some kind of title or if he was homeless, they probably would have regarded him as a "nobody" and not even bother to run the story. I once tried to apply for a job at the Postal Service, and was told that I couldn't unless I was a veteran. There are no hate crimes - - Life is life..POINT BLANK.......... WHY IS ONE PERSONS LIFE WORTH MORE THAN MINE OR YOURS????? Are we all created equal or not. Whats the difference???? Jorjor, I worked for the postal service and that was a lie. The reason they told you that was because most of the upper management are vets, hard nose one too. They want other vets to work for them because they are already disciplined and will follow the chain of command withour question. ofcapri, It kind of sounds like you're saying that we are all treated like dirt equally or life suks for everyone equally or something similar? @chestnut501 - Life is life - I don't think that anyones life is worth more than others. Yes, we have jobs where death is a possibility such as the police dept., fire dept., etc. but these jobs are filled with people whose eyes are wide opened and have the understanding that there are risk involved working these jobs. According to the existing system if a person is convicted of a hate crime he will receive a more severe sentence associated with the hate crime. If somebody say, killed you or me, why should they get a lessor sentence for the same crime. Is that not a product of discrimination? Is that poor old mans life that just died because some agency took it upon themselves to turn his ele... Ofcapri, Nothing wrong with "dragging it out". You just have more to say. And I agree that there shouldn't be any discrimination when handing out sentences for the same crime. That's something I suspect that a lot of people don't think about too often. Judges have too much power too and don't seem to answer to anyone creating more unfairness. I did do an update to this story today because the attorney general has openned an investigation into it and the Mayor of Bay City isn't allowing anymore heating being shut off until an investigation is done. So it looks like the situation is getting some attention. Thanks for the update. Thats good news that there is a investigation in progress. Usually people don't update on clipmarks but this is such a tragic story, I thought it would be nice to share that some good may come out of it and maybe someone else won't freeze to death. I was kind of surprised at the response myself. |
