I'm not familiar with how the penalizing option works in digg, but I think that instituting a "penalizing" option would be a bad idea.

First, it would probably become political, and the majority political view would probably win out. The risk would be clipmarks would become an echo chamber.

Second, it would make it less likely that people who share unusual interests would be able to connect with one another. For example, if people really hate my clips about statistics and start penalizing them, forcing them towards the bottom, that would make it less likely that someone with similar interests would see my clips. Second, it would make it less likely that people who share unusual interests would be able to connect with one another. For example, if people really hate my clips about statistics and start penalizing them, forcing them towards the bottom, that would make it less likely that someone with similar interests would see my clips. If they never see clips about statistics, then they might feel they shouldn't post such things, and then I would NEVER be able to see what cool stats links they found. As it is, sorting by comments and pops means that clips that people aren't interested in pass out of view quickly anyway.

Third, it would make Clipmarks more status-oriented, and people with the less popular clips would feel alienated from the community. Putting up a slew of clips that aren't popped or commented upon is one thing, but then to put up clips that are penalized is much worse.

I do agree with the point that editting clips could be improved though.

One clipping option I would love to see is an "append select" feature that is available in MS Word and Textpad (for PCs at least). This allows one to use the mouse to highlight multiple, seperate blocks of text by holding down the CTRL key.

Don't get me wrong, the clipping function as it is is pretty flexible, but sometimes you want to get parts of multiple paragraphs, not paragraphs in their entirety. Sometimes I've come across web pages where the orange lines wouldn't grab all of the text in a paragraph.

I also think this would reduce the temptation to publicly clip an entire webpage/article, something we should be discouraging.

I think you should be able to delete or edit a comment if others haven't added any comments after you. --> this would work much better if you allowed nested comments. That way, if a following comment is not related to what I've said, I can still edit/modify as I wish.

btw, the orange clipping frames don't work properly on many sites. (for example, this clipping)

PS: I'm loving the customizability of RSS feeds... I wish the resulting feeds had an xml extension though; the ones that are generated now are not automatically recognized by Firefox.

1) editing comments: i totally understand why that's wanted and i have wished for it many times. however, i really see it as a conversation, and like in conversations, you can't edit what you have already said (so many responses may have been made with your comment in mind, that to edit it would change the entire flow of the dialog). you can always comment again and restate your position, but spelling errors aside, i just don't think it's a good idea (just read canbebesi's idea about allowing editing if another comment hasn't been added and i like it!).

2) more flexibility in selecting content to clip: even if it takes enormous ...

3) easier way to add a clipmark to your clipboard: i kind of feel like if it's worthy of being added to your clipboard, then it deserves a pop.

4) editing clipmarks: i'll repost my earlier statement...when you see the Clipmark preview in the Save window, being able to hit cancel but still have the clipped stuff selected so you can either add more or remove some of the things you clipped (this is key because sometimes the orange lines don't make it exactly clear what you're going to get).

5) finding it difficult to make your way around this site: i hear that and totally understand. many people have said that we should simplify (aka dumb it down) so that it's easier for people to figure out. still others have said pick a theme (like kaboodle picked shopping) for clipping so people are given direction. i say f-that. we're trying to make it as powerful and flexible as possible while keeping it intuitive and relatively easy. i have enormous faith that once you get the hang of it you will embrace it and tell people you know about it and show them the ropes. we'll see.
