canbebesi says: I know I've only been using this for one day, but here is what I think of it so far. I'd say all your observations are very on point. I've wanted to penalize many clips myself but I couldn't decide if it would be better for the site (as a whole) to be able to "push" down clips one doesn't appreciate. Soon enough, bad clips sink towards the bottom anyway and, as the rate of public clipping increases, undeserving clips will sink out of sight that much faster. I'm not familiar with how the penalizing option works in digg, but I think that instituting a "penalizing" option would be a bad idea. First, it would probably become political, and the majority political view would probably win out. The risk would be clipmarks would become an echo chamber. Second, it would make it less likely that people who share unusual interests would be able to connect with one another. For example, if people really hate my clips about statistics and start penalizing them, forcing them towards the bottom, that would make it less likely that someone with similar interests would see my clips. If they never see clips about statistics, then they might feel they shou... I agree with kore7 and jklugman. For the sake of avoiding redundancy, i'll just leave it at that...very solid observations. Very well put, jklugman I have to admit that I have been thinking about a system like that too, but jklugman's point is def making me reconsider. As for the edit options, anyone have any ideas? I think we all agree here that it needs to change, so now would be the time to way in before we get to deep into figuring it out ourselves. here's one thing: when you see the Clipmark preview in the Save window, being able to hit cancel but still have the clipped stuff selected so you can either add more or remove some of the things you clipped (this is key because sometimes the orange lines don't make it exactly clear what you're going to get). One clipping option I would love to see is an "append select" feature that is available in MS Word and Textpad (for PCs at least). This allows one to use the mouse to highlight multiple, seperate blocks of text by holding down the CTRL key. Don't get me wrong, the clipping function as it is is pretty flexible, but sometimes you want to get parts of multiple paragraphs, not paragraphs in their entirety. Sometimes I've come across web pages where the orange lines wouldn't grab all of the text in a paragraph. I also think this would reduce the temptation to publicly clip an entire webpage/article, something we should be discouraging. I suspect this would be difficult to program and I'm... fully understood or grasped (Example: "Dangers not yet appreciated") [x] when you see the Clipmark preview in the Save window, being able to hitThis would be a great addition. jklugman, are you an Internet Explorer or a Firefox user? The reason I ask is because our Firefox extension actually formats pages when you click the clip button in order to allow you to clip specific paragraphs within a page. It's not perfect, but it does work quite well. The next version of our Internet Explorer toolbar will also include that among many other things to make it work more like the FF toolbar. Hmm...next on the list...a way to edit comments. Editing comments is quickly moving to the top of my list. However, not sure we will actually allow them to be edited. Most likely just deleted. There are many reasons to not allow editing, but we honestly haven't decided yet either way. Derek, I use FF. I was trying to say that it would be nice to clip parts of multiple paragraphs, but not the entire paragraphs themselves, which AFAIK is not possible in clipmarks. However, I may be the only one pining for this feature, so take my suggestion with a grain of salt--as you say, the current clipping methods work pretty well.--Josh I'd like a more clear way to add a clip to my Clipboard. Right now, it looks like I either have to pop a clip or comment on it for it to show up there. Could there be just a "Copy to My Clipboard" link? I think this would make it easier for new users. Maybe there is another way and I just don't see it... I also would like some option to clip stuff that does not appear within the orange lines. Maybe a 'select > right-click > clip' option or a 'select > drag & drop clip' option? jklugman, I understand now what you are asking for. We have thought about that, and while i'm sure we will add it someday, it would require way to much development time to implement in the near future. djiezes, maybe i'm not understanding you right, but do you realize that if you highlight something while in clip mode that it becomes part of your clip? Yes I do, but you cannot highlight multiple separate sections. So, first selecting and making it a clip, would solve that problem, since you could make a new selection without losing what you already had selected. In a way, what jklugman meant with 'appending selections'. I do find it a little difficult to make my way around this site, so I would say that you have a good point there. I'm really enjoying it being here, but it is a complicated place to figure out. I do find it a little difficult to make my way around this site, so I would say that you have a good point there. It's easy to forget that I was a bit overwhelmed by the site interface as well at first. There's a lot going on here. But, like Blinklist, the complexity pays off once one adapts to it...I use the CM and BL sites every day now. They're great tools. OK the way people have put it, I understand why you wouldn't want to have a "push-down" option. <quote>Editing comments is quickly moving to the top of my list. However, not sure we will actually allow them to be edited. Most likely just deleted. There are many reasons to not allow editing, but we honestly haven't decided yet either way.</quote> I think you should be able to delete or edit a comment if others haven't added any comments after you. --> this would work much better if you allowed nested comments. That way, if a following comment is not related to what I've said, I can still edit/modify as I wish. (also, I hope I'm doing the quote thing correctly, if not, how do you do it?) ... I want to respond to 5 of the ideas being discussed here: 1) editing comments: i totally understand why that's wanted and i have wished for it many times. however, i really see it as a conversation, and like in conversations, you can't edit what you have already said (so many responses may have been made with your comment in mind, that to edit it would change the entire flow of the dialog). you can always comment again and restate your position, but spelling errors aside, i just don't think it's a good idea (just read canbebesi's idea about allowing editing if another comment hasn't been added and i like it!). 2) more flexibility in selecting content to clip: even if it takes enormous ... At last a nice discussion about clipmarks functionality (or older just gone away from Hot Now list?) In my opinion it would be great if I could take a screen shots from the particular area of the page which has something what can't be reproduced by the current copy/save method. Often times I see a nice design element which I cannot put to clipmarks. That's all. Nice to be here. Regards, Greg I just got another idea... How about some automatic links that you can put on your blog and when you click it it automagically clips the content and brings you to the tite/tags/desc. page? (like: digg this, or add to my del.icio.us) I think it would go a very long way in terms of gaining more users. (British informal) very chic (Example: "Groovy clothes") [x] Often times I see a nice design element which I cannot put to clipmarks.I imagine the realm of what's clippable on the web will increase with time. ClipMarks already feels so big it's easy to forget in reality it's still small. What I want to know is how to get those groovy orange lines to activate in my real-life visual field. Imagine walking down the sidwalk with bright orange frames expanding and contracting around every person or object you see allowing anything to be saved for later perusal and sharing. Clipped. Clipped. Clipped.... What I want to know is how to get those groovy orange lines to activateThat would be SO cool. hahahahah! Orange lines (or a colour of your choice) around all life's desirables is a WONDERFUL idea! Kore7, there is no question that is coming...seriously. Sorry.. me be trying... <blockquote>How do you do the quote thing?</blockquote> "How do you do the quote thing?" [How do you do the quote thing?] How do you do the quote thing? <How do you do the quote thing?> {How do you do the quote thing?} ::How do you do the quote thing?:: **How do you do the quote thing?** Clearly not any of those ways! But I've been wondering that too. Quoting is a secret ClipMark Illuminati feature only! Don't attempt to find us...you'll be invited when the time is right... Ha ha. Don't give away too many secrets kore At the moment, the way to do the quote thing is to comment on the clipmark's permalink page -- you can get to it by clicking the title of the clipmark. You'll notice the formatting options above the Add a Comment text area. We are working on a way to incorporate them into the navigator interface -- should have it soon. Some sites can not be clipmarked, don't know why, the Climparks extension does not work for those few sites. Please Eric Goldstein, do something. Besides. I would like more freedom to frame what exactly I want to clip, sometimes the options that Clipmarks give me are not exactly what I need to clip. I mean, the mouse pointer should be able to define a frame for a clip, any number of times, before saving. Not that the frames appear by themselves and I can just click them or not. Anyway, these are improvements. Clipmarks is already amazingly useful and good. Eric, one more thing. Why there's a limit of 100 clips when I navigate the "Mine" Clipmarks section? I'd prefer all my Clipmarks available directly from "Mine", not just 100. Thanks! The 100 limit only applies when you're sorting by pops and/or comments. If you want to see them all, just uncheck those 2 sorting options at the top of the middle column and then hit "sort" Thanks Eric, I did not know. Is there a whole user manual of the site? A lot of questions are answered in our FAQ (2 parts). You can get there by mousing over "help" in the header and then you'll see an option for FAQ. I've been working on more questions and answers, but honestly have been pretty negligent about getting them uploaded. Will try to find some time today to get that done. I noticed that If you clip something when not much poeple are online you have more chances of not being seen, maybe most poeple come here though a clip they make? That would be interessting to find out. That' also why I thought it would be nice to see how many poeple are on line. [q]I've wanted to penalize many clips myself but I couldn't decide if it would be better for the site (as a whole) to be able to "push" down clips one doesn't appreciate. Soon enough, bad clips sink towards the bottom anyway and, as the rate of public clipping increases, undeserving clips will sink out of sight that much faster.[/q] Not allways true I've found good clips poeple missed. I would'nt want Clipmarks to become like digg, too busy and competition like. So, we made some changes today in response to suggestions and concerns we've heard from many of you. 1st: Look up. we moved the print, email, save and link buttons as well as the Pop button to the top of the Clipmark. They will remain fixed when you scroll down to read comments. 2d: In the "My Clipboard" tab we have broken My Public Clipmarks, Clipmarks I popped and Clipmarks I commented on out so they're now their own menu items (they used to be nested under the Activity bar). I hope you find that these help. Eric, please help. I cannot save clips anymore. You have changed something this last update that makes impossible for me to save clips from both my laptops (one is W. 98 SE, the other is W Xp, both Firefox 1.0.6 and 1.0.7 respectively). When I click "clip" I see the orange frames and can select clips, but when I hit "save" nothing happens, no pop saving window, but the orange frames are still available for more clipping. No saving!! S.O.S. london....check my profile and contact me via email or skype (i also have aim on right now...egold26). i'll do my best to help. Eric, I have sent you a message by email and another to your support address. Desperate. Big thanks to london2020 for pointing out a problem with saving. Sorry to anyone who wasn't able to save clipmarks for the past hour. Derek just fixed it so it should be all clear now. I was wondering as Clipmarks gets big, having top Clippers makes it harder for beguinners to be noticed, that's why I think Tags should be default for public. Now it's Clipperes everywhere My sense is that we'll continue to default to clippers but offer you the ability to choose for yourself if you would prefer tags as the default (probably a profile setting). I just found out about the crazy clip what happened? Eric, I don't understand what ycc2106 means. Could you explain? Feature request: please allow sending messages to other users. Like in user profile: "send a message to this user". This is a feature that exists in flickr and is very useful. london2020, now clippers are default view and I think that gives less chance beginners to get noticed than tags. What do you think? ycc2106, I get what you mean. Going to Hot Now or Public, first thing you see is people that clips. Tags are one clik away only. I don“t see much difference. If someone wahts to be noticed, just clip a lot and comment a lot. In my case, I was surprised to be featured among the list of clippers. I have 11 followers at the moment, 5 of them are ghosts, i.e. they don't have profile photo, and no clips, tags or folders. I think they are spies. Their names are: jhanajian, jp131, djbrand, mouseart, jcrosslin. If you are not spies, then comment here, introduce yourself, say anything about your interests, or where you live, whatever. FYI I am not affiliated to any political party nor I belong to any organization. I speak from my own mind and I represent on one else. Some may say I have lots of imagination, I say I read between the lines of the world events. I don't like ghost followers. I have 11 followers at the moment, 5 of them are ghosts, i.e. theyI'm frightened of that. As a chinese,I have 8 followers now.2 of them are ghosts:jp131 and mclaw.Hope that they're not cops. By the way, maybe clipmarks could be more easier to use. Many of my chinese friends dont know how to use it(clip, save and then public),though there's a Demo already. Hey ZG, that gives me an idea. Clippers from various parts of the world could write How-To's in their respective languages. In your case I understand how having "ghost followers" might make you nevous, but when I read L2020"s comment about these "ghosts" I was thinking, "what's the big deal?". I never even thought to see who's following me, or even that I could find out. 2 things i'd like to address: 1) we are definitely going to build in a direct messaging within the site like london2020 suggested above. it's one of our top priorities. 2) regarding the "ghost" followers, i'm not sure there is really all that much we can realistically do. i guess i feel that if they are cops of some sort, they would and could very easily upload a fake profile image and info. I just don't see any way to keep that from happening here or anywhere else on the web. certainly open to suggestions if you have any. I think it's much ado about nothing. After all, you can follow someone's clips easily, whether you announce the fact or not. Maybe you are right Godfrey and I am paranoid. But it's so easy trace someone's IP and actual identity, home place, etc, that's scary, if one happens to say things that others don't like. There's many mad people out there, not even counting our dear secret services from any country! I understand your point Eric G, there's not much you can do. |
