The Fish and Wildlife Service (FWS) are currently working on a decision to recommend if the polar bear should be officially designated as a threatened species so it would be protected under the Endangered Species Act (ESA).

Pretty convenient for the federal government to pass this sale exactly one week before the service’s recommendation is due. (Recommendation due January 9, 2008 - Sale passed on January 2, 2008).

What will happen to the polar bears when one of their few habitats is turned into a oil and gas field?

I'm not too optimistic...
With a $1600/year Permanent Fund Dividend (bribe) for every resident in AK, the Repub. Gov. totally locked into Big Oil and the Feds doing their usual sellout, what chance does the environment have? On one hand we have:
Dr. Derocher at the University of Alberta, who has seen the loss of Arctic habitat firsthand during his 25 years studying polar bears, argues that the science is solid and that it's time for governments to protect species made vulnerable by climate change.
Then there' the FWS guy:
