Uh oh, here they come! No doubt that with the deficit spending running out of control, Congress is seeking a way to bring in more tax revenue. Why not go after net-addicted Americans?

Exactly where are they going to get information that will confirm or refute a tax return ? What information will they have the power to acquire ? How do you give someone in China a Tax Audit. The surprise isn't that they are thinking about taxing the net, it's the time that they're taking to work out how.

My guess is that they'll do something like the article said. Most likely tax the internet provider (who will pass it along to the consumer). I don't know how they'd tax email, other than to tax the provider. Since so many give email away for free, they'd have to either eat the cost or start charging a subscription fee.

This would be a terrible mistake in my opinion. I think the Internet has a lot to do with the fact that the U.S. economy has held strong over the past

oops, didn't mean to click "post comment". to finish the thought...

I think the Internet has a lot to do with the fact that the U.S. economy has held strong over the past 6 or 7 years despite a growing trade deficit, massive spending on the war and now falling housing prices. i wouldn't mess with that.

The internet and technology have really been a boon to worker productivity. I also think it has helped keep inflation somewhat under control as we can shop for the best prices online, and it has forced companies to keep their profit margins thin so that they can be competitive.

There have been quite a few things that worked perfectly until the government decided to 'fix' them, or become a 'silent partner' It's fine for them to shoot themselves in the foot, then they decide everyone else should be shot in the foot-Just to be fair. Most of the internet is getting out of range. How long before the system starts generating cyber politicians who have a clear understanding of the scope of the net.? Instead of trying to put old shoes on a new horse.
