Congress should immediately convene hearings to discuss alternatives to General McChrystal's proposal for such a massive escalation of the war in Afghanistan. It is time for the administration and Congress to demilitarize U.S. policy in Afghanistan and strike out in a new, sustainable, direction.

The U.S. doesn't have 500K troops to send anywhere, even after striping Korea and homeland units bare.

I was just reading a book about the Soviet involvement in Afghanistan; their general also said they'd need about half a million troops there.

I don't why the hell the US thinks it's going to be any different for us than it was for the Soviets. Or the British.
