This country is sunk when people can't understand the difference between "freedom to dissent" and "freedom from dissent." Real freedom allows DISSENT! Ridiculous...and dangerous, like not giving the Hitler salute. Freedom means free to NOT participate in something you don't believe in. It is ridiculous that he wouldn't stand. He knew the school rules. It wasn't the government of the US telling this kid to stand it was the school district. Do we let any kid who is against a school district policy disobey any rule they don't like? Thats B.S., then again, the whole pledge is is B.S. People don't know that the pledge was created by a socialist to indoctrinate school kids to obey "the State". Besides, pledges should be made by adults, fully cognizant of what their doing. Children should not be made to recite a pledge, it looses all meaning. I agree with sillysam, that it was part of the schools rules. And dissent from rules should be dealt with in a fitting manner. But from this, the school governing body will have to discuss if it is a rule they still want to impose, as it is a constriction on the individuals “freedom”. Our schools used to recite the “Lords Prayer” before each assembly, but then later change to a minutes silence for personal reflection to cater for the other religions. Sillysam and brimstone --walking in lockstep to the rules without question--tone reason this country is in so much trouble. Sig Heil! Sillysam and brimstone forget that employees of a public school system ARE employees of the government and by definition ARE part of the government. Now if only these two were as adamant about this government "following the rules and/or laws" as they were about other doing so. And as for the Lords Prayer, thank the Supreme Court for that one. I do. While I lean towards the gesture of rebellion in spirit,I would admonish the individuals for being discourteous. One can still respectfully stand as a symbol of respect to those who do wish to recite these things, much as I stood up for the Russian anthem before the Canadians smashed them at hockey. @swampfoxz Respect is a two way street. I graduated from high back in 1975. I didn't stand for the prayer or pledge back then. One day the teacher came over to me asked if "out of respect for the other students' beliefs, I wouldn't mind standing." I replied "of course not, I'll stand, but tomorrow, out of respect for my beliefs would they all remain seated?" She turned beet-red and walked off. So, showing one-sided respect is fine if you're on the receiving end, but you can forget reciprocation. Yes you may agree with rebellion, but not to punish the rebel you will have chaos. It is only after the act of punishment can we open a dialogue and ask the questions was the punishment just, is the rule unjust that lead to the rebellion. "Yes you may agree with rebellion, but not to punish the rebel you willIt's not rebellion, it's the law. Maybe you forget, it's already been decided by the Supreme Court. You cannot force someone to stand during the moment of silence or the pledge. Ever hear of the "Bill of Rights?" Rights are not privileges, they're RIGHTS! |
