Sorgalim says:
Turning back the clock on the ultimate form of self-knowledge is neither possible nor desirable. We can live with the new challenges from brain science. But it will require setting aside childlike intuitions and traditional dogmas, and thinking afresh about what makes people better off and worse off.

With antidepressant and anti-anxiety drugs so common, critics wonder whether we're losing the ability to overcome problems through force of will.
I do think there is some truth to that. That is certainly not to say that medication isn't necessary or helpful in many circumstances. But i do worry that it is becoming too much of a crutch and hopeful quick fix solution for people to turn to.

The problem with the brain is that we are not able to see if anything is wrong with it (unless obvious tumors or things like that)
If we see an amputee, we believe it is OK for the person to have an orthopedic limb. For us it is obvious that it cannot be overcome through force of will!!
If you are diabetic, force of will won't help you at all. It is OK to take insulin.
But if you have a couple of non-working neurons or some connections are missing or misplaced, we don't see them. Why do we have to believe they can be solved through force of will? In many cases, they can't

The worst part of this condition is that others can't fill what they fill...Sometimes you can notice that something is really bad with them but can't understand what or why happens...It is not easy, but they can be back sooner using a professional help or medication...Those persons will be back faster to be who really they are...It fills like been in another place for a while and can't understand what is going on...

That is exactly what happens with those conditions...Is like you say kwonsu...Sometimes you have to see to believe and that is the worse part for a person in depression...If others can't see, they can't understand and can't help...and is worse for the sick person...

Speaking from personal experience with both a mental disorder and having been exposed to several psych meds along the way....I feel both arguments have their place. I refer to "force of will" as definitely having merit, because one cannot rely on a medication to change a deep funk without at least a change in attitude. The power of the mind, even a dysfunctioning one, can do amazing things, including to defeat any assistance one might get from medications even when prescribed for a biochemical disorder.

But, on the complete flip side, how many of these so called treatments and medications are actually tested well enough or turn out a few years down ...

All our thoughts are correct and each one of them needs respect...When you think of all what is going on around our world you can understand why many people gets depress...But, not always depression is about something around us...When you see that something happens to you but can't explain what is it then something is wrong...

I believe that women are stronger than men in different ways...but at the time wasn't like that...when you fill like I did years ago, you are going to use a crutch like egoldstein said...and i used it...At this moment I'm not using medicine all the time, but if i need it again i think that i will...At this moment i fill strong...i fill full of life... and i real...
