Interesting--particularly the observation that intellectuals "idealize foreign ideologies because the foreign models are not seen in action." They lack the hindsight of experience of seeing the foreign ideology fail; and lack the foresight to be wary of arbitrary changes that might destabilize their own culture. "Intellectuals" can become habituated into 'discursive thinking', manipulating abstract concepts, models, connections etc. Lacking experience of the world, aspects of their personality - such as relating, feeling, moral sensibility- maybe undeveloped. This would make them very ripe for the polarised certainties exhibited by anyone with undeveloped emotional and moral values, but in their case their intelligence makes them incredibly efficient at arguing their position. Like many insecure people, they may have to protect a very fragile ego with grandiose posturings. |
