The new tool promises to give musicians and producers powerful new ways to manipulate recordings both old and new.It might let studio engineers peer inside a chord-heavy rhythm-guitar part and nudge individual notes into tune. Or it could let them salvage unheard takes by classic musicians like Duke Ellington or Jimi Hendrix, left unreleased due to out-of-tune instruments or misplayed notes. It will certainly give musicians new ability to sculpt sound, such as prerecorded samples or loops, as if they were modeling clay.

Wow - I've been waiting for somethink like this for a long time. I don't think they'll ever be able to full pull out noise (such as rough vocals or drums) from a full waveform, but being able to split out individual notes from a track is very cool

Extremely significant. As technology emerges so do new art forms. In addition to the cited examples of immediate applications to music, the comparison with 'modelling clay' suggests that the art of sound, the creation of soundscapes, also will advance as was the case with video art, digital art generally, and the combination of new technologies into art installations.

What I get from live performances is something more than just the music itself. But I really enjoy hearing the wild things that can be created with digital (or other) manipulation.
